Naming inanimate objects doesn't seem that weird. Think about warships, or just ships in general. Planes, (Enola Gay) cannons/artillery pieces, tanks, swords, and plenty of other weapons have a long tradition of being named.

I do not yet own a live blade, as I am only fifteen. However, as soon as I am sixteen, I will be given the honor and priviledge of my own Katana (SBG Custom). I have however, in preparation for owning my own blade, treated my Cold Steel Polypropylene bokken as if it were steel. This includes naming it and carving it's name into the blade. (Scratching is really the only damage polypropylene will not resist.) I named it Solistice, by the way. A sword is a sword, an instrument of war, but the Katana is the very soul of it's owner. It should be treated with respect, affection and care. Why shouldn't it be personified? It simply shows attachment to the object in question.

I have one sword that was named by myself and several helpful forumites. A rewrapped DSA Guardian that was dubbed 'Avandring' in This Thread. It was like 20 pages or so in. Anyways, it means 'Goat Hammer', read the thread to figure it out......................................

sure there are some sword naming i find wierd but sword with nicknames they deserve because of something is ok i guess. it's like in life it's when you deserve a nickname that this nickname take it's sense for example here'S some example written on the kashima sisters' website about nihonto: ''Nicknames of swords It is not common, but some swords have a nickname that are put by some reasons. For example, by its cutting quality. Kago-Tsurube, (Draw water by basket), impossible to stay. Sasa-no-Yuki, (Snow on bamboo leaves) means easy to (cut) down. Sasa-no-Tsuyu, (Dewdrop on bamboo leaf), same to Sasa-no-Yuki. By appearance of the hamon Mikazuki, (Crescent moon) => Mikazuki Munechika Ara-Iso, (Rough beach) Asa-Arashi, (Morning storm) Yamatorige, (Feather of pheasant) By its shape Hocho, (Kitchin nife), thin and broad tanto. Oni-(no)-Hocho, (Devil's kitchin nife), big size wakizashi Oh-, (great) => Oh Kanehira By episode in the past. Kusanagi, (grass cutting) Doji-giri, (cut the burglar "Shuten-doji) => Doji-giri Yasutsuna Nikkari, (mimemic word of smiling), cut a smiling ghost Tombo-giri, (cut a dragonfly) By owner's name Uesugi-tachi Hojo-tachi'' i think that it make sense to give a name if the sword deserve it otherwise it's the choice of the man who own it to do it or not.

I haven't named any of my swords. I have however given my car (chevy silverado pickup) a name... I call it "sketvrålet", which basically means "The semprini-roar" in swedish... It's partly a wordplay on the brand name, Chevrolet. Add a T in the middle and mess about with the swedish pronounciation for a bit and you're there. The other part of the explanation is simply because the car has earned a bad nickname, because I've had loads of trouble with it...

If I read that first name correctly, that is "Love-sword." What about the second?

I never name my swords as though they were pets or relatives, but I've definitely thought about the names of the people and characters my blades remind me of. Who inspired me to buy that blade or who would be comfortable using it in a story-- that sort of thing. Those are easy enough to list, but the swords don't have names themselves. Just associations. From left to right, if my swords didn't belong to me they'd fit well in the hands of people named: Jack, Hector, Westley, Boromir, Elendil, Aragorn, Strider, Faramir, Bilbo, Don Diego, Beatrix, and Selena. I suppose these could also function as descriptions of who you kind of feel like when you pick up each sword.

Nice name choice, Grendel means grinder.
My friends viking sword is named "blóð safnarar" or blood gatherer. I haven't named a sword yet but I've been considering it for a while.

One day, when I have a lot more money, I'm going to custom order a really nice viking sword, which I will then name Skröna - literally "tall tale." I just think that's a really great name for a viking sword.

I've named only one of my swords personally. It's the single-hand Gothic William Swiger gave me. I call it "The Swig."

Oh, bloody hell. I got my translation screwed up on "wode." I'm not sure which is funnier, though.

I only name things I use all the time, I have a two bladed Schrade Old Timer that I have carried for 25 years, it's Grandpa, my very new Kukri is called "bite" because that's the first thing it did, - bite me.
My old katana, a Hiromitsu Fukuda is called Bloody Tojo, it has two blood stains that could only have come from "use"
While I have many others there are only a few that are named.
