the question for me isnt why by a sword...its why NOT buy a sword so in my opinion, if you have to ask, youl only waste your money.

Some years ago I would have asked this question to come up with reasons for convincing my parents that I NEED that sword

Come on guys, I know Im a noob but the answer is obvious, because the sword is one of the single most used weapon without history, you start with the basics!

Well, after the axe, knife and spear, sure. Swords have been mere sidearms for most of the three and a half millennia they have existed, handily outnumbered in war by spears and polearms for all of their history - and the haftless stone axe had over two hundred thousand years of use before that.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply to you all guys. I just lost interest.
However, I’m a lot more ecstatic about getting a sword because I decided to make one myself. It’ll be a bronze khopesh. It can be a showpiece, but also a functional weapon.

There is a simple answer that has been overlooked - buy a good antique nihonto, not too old, a nice Gendai should do, you get a classic sword that is both beautiful as well as sharp.
The value will appreciate much faster than inflation.

Why should you buy a sword? To decapitate the zombies of course. No seriously. You play guitar. What drew you to that? What was it that made you say, thats it?Thats me?Why did you get that very first one? The reason you should,is because you are here asking us.Youve already bought the sword dude, you just havent picked it out and ordered it yet. The first for me,forgive my corniness please, lol. It just felt right, hard to explain when I held it,very primal yet elegant, powerful but subtle. It just felt right, like it was supposed to be in my hands.

Asking a Sword Forum "should I buy a sword?" is like asking a bunch of drunks "should we go into that bar for a drink or two?"

it works something like this -
Step 1 - buy a sword Step 2 - buy another sword Step 3 - buy another sword Step 4 - buy another sword Step 5 - buy another sword Step 6 - oil your swords Step 7 - buy another sword Step 8 - buy another sword Step 9 - buy another sword Step 10 - buy another sword Step 11 - oil your swords again Step 12 - repeat Step 1

I'm only at step six so far...waiting on step seven to come in stock. Eight and nine are under consideration.
Edit: I'm kinda tired of waiting on number seven to come in stock. Would I be breaking the code if I jumped to number eight?

Swordaholics Unanimous is a journey, not a destination. Every Step 12 is the Step 1 of a new cycle.
Someone mentioned in another post that they were looking to get their 30th sword before turning 30. I'm over 50, so I guess I've got a lot of buying to do.

It depends on the country you live in and what it allows you to own and carry or if you think you might need to fall back on a sword.
Nowadays I think the most practical (Whether you can buy a gun or not) would still be a Xiphos, Gladius or one of those Bronze swords (Since they are all relatively small in that size and even smaller, needing little maintenance). 44.5 - 53-ish centimeters long blades or less would be best for most houses in today's times.
One major problem with modern day is that they make the houses of windows insanely large.
I also think it would help if there were some techniques or manuals on how you would make the best use of a sword if its the only thing you have to defend against home invaders using common modern day melee implements, the most common sword-like weapon of which they might attack you with is the machete.
