Hey guys... I just saw this article over on MSN about the swords used in Game of Thrones... it's mostly standard stuff that anyone on this forum (or anyone at all who's studied Medieval History) would know... but it's kind of cool to see it given some respect. Of course they also had a mention of the original "Valyrian Steel" GoT replicas... which are pretty much SLO's (When is someone going to come out with good quality replicas of the blades in the SHOW???)... but I'll tolerate that in exchange for the good press... Check it out for yourselves: cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/03/29/10925468-real-life-sword-science-plays-role-in-game-of-thrones

Thanks for the article. Just had a look at the valyrian steel website, makes me a bit uneasy that the reviews from people who have bought the swords talk about swinging them around  . Also I may be missing it somewhere, but I can't find info on the site that says that the swords are not functional!

Eh that article actually seemed like it was filled with misinformation and myths. 200 blades in one damascus?
The steel is listed as 1060 (and 1060 "damascus" lol). They could very well be functional, albeit more by the letter of the law than the spirit... but to be fair the same could be said of many of the ultra-cheap range repos from our production companies. Not that I condone casual collectors swinging them around.
Has anyone in the sword community actually bought one and examined it?

At their prices, no. The only one that looks vaguely appealing is robert's hammer, but that's still a lot of dough. The rest all have major issues.

Actually the descriptions for all the swords clearly state stainless steel... so yeah, totally non-functional. They're cool looking and all, and I'm a huge fan of the show and books, but there's no way I'd ever pay that kind of money for a wallhanger.
*edit* aaaah, I see... they have the "Damascus Edition" versions that are 1060... didn't realize that, they're sold out and easy to overlook on the website. Also 3x the price of the normal ones, but that's to be expected I guess.
