So, There's a few archery backstops out there premade with little target reticles and the such.... for 100+
anyone know of a location or ideas on something cheaper and where to pick it up?
I was thinking a big cube of foam much like you'd get for a cheap floor mattress, but am unsure of the cost. and how well the arrows will "stick"... and how long it'll last.
suggestions would be wondiferous.

see this thread on same topic: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=4493&hilit=+archery(my post from that thread) My target- A box filled with leftover boxes and whatever styrofoam from stuff thats been shipped to me- all wrapped in duct tape. (some might say lots of duct tape but Red Green would be proud) Stops my arrows shot from a compound bow- but not one with a crazy high #'dage. Holes fixed easily with more duct tape. Whole thing has bungee cords run through it to hang anywhere. Here's a vid I made for Greg a while back:

^That is a great idea. Personally I use one of those layered foam "block" targets, the friction is more than enough to stop my arrows.

I make my own targets in three different ways.
1) Plastic tarps. Old tarps that had gotten ripped I folded over until square and bundled together with some rope. Then used some spray paint to add some targets to them.
2) Cardboard box. A cardboard box stuffed in layers with cardboard scraps, plastic shopping bags wadded up, bubble wrap, even styrofoam packing peanuts and small styrofoam pieces. All wrapped in duct tape with painted targets on it.
3) Plastic mesh bags. I had a bunch of plastic mesh bags left over from a landscaping project that were made like burlap bags but with a weave of plastic. I took most of the bags and stuffed them into two bags making nice smaller targets I can hang from a branch.
There are a lot of videos on youtube about making DIY archer targets. The ones that are hard are targets for broadheads and there you would be best off either buying a foam target block or finding a source for marine foam floats which are basicly the same foam as the broad head targets.
If you live near the ocean you might try looking over the beaches as you can often find large foam blocks of marine foam washed ashore.

Oh of course one of the best systems is the sandwiched carpet style.
These kinds will last for ages and will definitely stop your arrows. The big draw back on them is they are made more for a permanent location and are not as mobile as some other targets. Great for a dedicated shooting location though.
