That's a pretty nice little buckler for the price. I also noticed that MRL now has a BattleCry Roman gladius in the new stuff. Pretty cool looking, but I have all the gladius I need with my CS machete.

That is the first time I’ve seen the gauge mentioned. 20 gauge, no thanks. My 12” buckler is 14 ga. and I wasn’t in the market anyway. But 20 ga.? To give some idea of what to expect go here and at mark 0:54 you will see them testing a 20 ga. shield, which falls apart in short order.

Ahhh...Thanks pgandy! I didn't initially notice the 20ga. description. If it were to just hang on the wall with a sword...maybe. I could punch through 20ga. with a butterknife. It's still neat looking, with a nice finish and handle. I'll stick with my 'Mini-Viking/Mega-buckler' project I'm working on. Leather covered, 14ga. boss, 3/4" plywood, steel rim, almost 18" across...ought to do in a pinch.

But...it puzzles me. Why would a line of 'fully functional' swords build a lightweight, powderpuff SHIELD? I would think at LEAST 16ga. WTF Windlass?

Just goes to show what the masses will do without being fully informed and what companies can get away with, though these companies should still respect basic historical competency which will be rewarded or chastised by various communities in the future.

It tempered high carbon steel. I know guys that do BOTN, and they use 20 to 22 gauge tempered steel to make their armor lighter and stronger than mild unhardened steel.

Lighter is lighter, so there is always that, and need should fit environment (why go heavier/slower than you need). I would still want a thicker shield than the armor I wore.
