Apparently not. Particularly lookout's and those who would be running the ship at night wore them, though it likely did cover some empty sockets i'd think. Done right, it let the rods in the eye stay 'awake' whereas in light exposed eyes the cones are more so. This meant, flip the patch, and you had a good eye to see out of.
They did a ton of tests, and apparently the rods, which are primarily responsible for night vision can take hours to fully awaken. and the belowdecks of a ship is dark blah blah... Lot of science, but in the end, it's proven that while that may not have been the sole or primary intent, it works. I'm slated to work night shift at a renfaire for security, so who knows, may get bored and try it out. lol.

I saw that Mythbusters episode. It was amazing the difference in their ability to make it through the obstacle when using a patch and when not. When both eyes were exposed to light and then they were immediately sent into the dark obstacle. They could barely walk through and missed their targets. After wearing the patch for quite some time and then going through the dark obstacle, all they had to do was flip up the patch and they made it right through. The patch allowed the eye to be adjusted to the dark. Walk into a room, close the door and shut off the light. At first you seem to be in total darkness. After a few minutes your eyes adjust and you can start to see objects. The longer you are in the room, the better you begin to see things. Same concept for the eye patch, it just allowed for immediate ability to see when thrown into a low light situation.

Pirate week eh? Should've done Irish Week and thrown in a ring-hilt or two Though that sash isn't too bad looking, actually. Might complement a Middle Eastern outfit as well as pirate...

Man, i'm about over all the pirate gear. Just, bleargh. But ren-faire season is starting in a month of two, so that probably motivates this hash of pirate stuff.
