This is a series of informative and imperical videos being done by me in cooperation with Chris Scoggin of Ronin Katana. Some are informational in nature and some involve me doing some stupid stuff.
Disclaimer No. 1 : SBG , nor its owner nor staff , Marc Ridgeway , nor Ronin Katana or its owner and or staff endorse risky and destructive testing with swords. Swords are dangerous and doing stupid things with them is more dangerous still. I do this having some experience , some precautions and a butt-load of stupidity. Please do not try to replicate these tests.
Disclaimer No. 2 : In some of the informational videos I may seem to be innacurate to you , I may misspeak some anal detail of steels or hardening or may pronounce words wrong. Some of you are going to be more knowledgeable than me. If you think I have made a mistake and am (God forbid ) wrong... mea culpa ... I admit it ... youre right , I'm wrong... there with that out of the way , there will be no point in pointing it out or cluttering the thread with anal observations , corrections or arguments. These videos were made for the you-tube masses , not for experts... and I believe they are accurate enough for that purpose.
I had to create a new youtube channel for this , as I had far too many copyright strikes on my cutting vids for youtube to allow me to upload 30 minute videos...
There will be several more videos forthcoming.. only one test has been done so far...
Without further adieu .... the videos :

Simply...AWESOME. Thanks for these vids Marc, gave me a lot of insight into katanas as well as how well the Dojo line performs.

Man that must have been fun cutting all these different things. I am envious of your yard. Me and my neighbors don't have fences and basically share an open yard. It makes doing anything outside a little embarrassing. Great videos. I wouldn't mind buying a Ronin for a cutting practice sword.

Good job Marc. It did quite well and is pretty darn tough for a 1045 blade.

You know I reallly expected more response from this... I realize the video was long. I will try to cut down the next video Anyone have any suggestions to make this more interesting?

It's interesting as is, and petting the dog while discussing the planned destruction of a sword was awesome. I think people just haven't realized this is here yet.

Unit you are lucky to even HAVE a yard.. I knew these were here I just didnt say anything yet and It took awhile to get through them. It was a little sad seeing the poor sword go through that but I kept telling myself "its for research". Its good to know what they can handle.

What is there to say? You did a wonderful job, as always. And Ronin's reputation is well established. One thing can be concluded from this test is that the fittings is very important. The kashira failed before the blade. I am glad that the company is moving on to steel fitting. I hate zinc fitting. Why go through the trouble of making a functional blade to be put on non-functional fittings.
BTW, I did not take you for a man with a small dog. I was expecting a big manly dog  . I also envy your unlimited supply of bamboo.

this was pretty bad ass mark, something you could try on the next one, Isao machi sensei cut a metal pole with one of his swords, lets see if a ronin katana is up to the task! also, id like to see the effects of some blade to blade contact, but in a way to simulate a parry using the spine of the blade, so what i mean is Edge on Spine in a glancing blow, to see how much edge damage is taken, and see how much damage the parrying sword takes to the spine as well. We know real swordfights didnt involve bashing sword blades together, but it is accurate that they used the flat and spine to parry, so that would be an excellent test. another test could be to cut the ito somewhere along the handle, and see if the wrap is substantial enough to stay, (if its properly done it shouldnt all come undone) Hence the reason for the alternating ito. Also, if its available, cow skulls, leg bones ext (wet not dry) would be a good test, Ok i admit it...i love watching cold steel videos LOL. but seriuously, if it can take on a cow skull, immagine what it can do to a man. Another test could be sword against something comparable to plate mail i forget how thick plate mail was, but that would be interesting as well

Seconds to some of Saito's requests. I did a cutting test many years ago on a roadkill whitetail with a KC 26. One kesa giri later I had two deer. Right through rib cage and spine. Perhaps a GRAPHIC WARNING caveat if you do flesh and bone testing. My request would be a dodan cut of a can of dog food. Make that two cans. One on its side and the other on end. Cut on the table with either a mound of earth, sawdust or folded towels for support. And on the video - can you tell me EXACTLY when the tip rolled? I must have missed it. Hopefully not during the trash can peircing as that would indicate to me some less than stellar tempering since the ha chipped and the point rolled on the somewhat thin steel can. I wouldn't mind seeing the aratameshi test sequence done on one of them. www.nihontocraft.com/Aratameshi_Nihonto.htmlAnd finally, thanks Marc for doing these tests. Please give the swords a proper burial and say a few words. or better yet part out the remains or mount all five on some kind of wall plaque with an insription like the mei of many katana..." on a lucky day in January...NOT!"

For semprinis n giggles....Got any car engine blocks, Cement pillars, or Steel Rods laying around to cut in half effortlessly whilst the sword takes 0 damage?

Even if there are starving people in other countries with literally nothing, it does not make it less embarrassing to swing a sword outside in my yard. I am very fortunate to be alive in such a good country, but people are not any less freaked out by my sword when they think of the less fortunate.

Huh? Somewhat thin can steel? Thats a bad ass trashcan man... Look, that trash-can isnt one that you can goe to Lowes and buy today.... That thing is older than I am. Plate armour? I promise you that trash can is thicker and heavier than any plate. The sword had an EXTREMELY good heat treat... I've had Hanwei katana chip on Bottle mouths. The sword tip started bending the first time it pierced the can... and it continued the next three times. For a 1045 katana to handle that abuse as well as it did is amazing... and to expect it to do any better would be disengenuous. Most people expect 1045 katana to take edge rolls on Bamboo... we showed that to be untrue... This isn't the best picture of the can... but see if you can tell the thickness of that rim... I'd give it 12mm Guys I don't have access to cow skulls or deer carcasses ... I actually did some of the spine strikes and flat strikes ... I'll do more. Dog food... we can do that ...

If I'm thinking of the same video he is, it was about an inch in diameter laying on a table.

Sweet videos, Mark. I'm loving them. The only way I can see improving on these is by somehow working in the trampoline I see in the background. Maybe for the 1060 Dojo Pro video?
The steel pipe Saito refers to is at about 7:30 of this video. You could watch the whole thing, though. It's really awesome.
