Hi All. Please help, I really am torn with this. I've wanted an Atlantean sword for as long as I can remember. I'm not asking for much. All I really want is to be able to swing it around a bit, not even come in contact with things. At first, I was really thinking about buying the Marto version, but then alot of people said it probably has a rat-tail tang which makes it very likely to snap if swung around. Well I've searched the internet heavily but I could not find a single report or disassembled picture confirming a rat-tail tang. In fact, on the contrary-- one guy was pleasantly surprised to find a real tang when he took his Celtic Marto sword apart: www.swordforum.com/forums/showth ... nstruction So does anybody know for a fact if the Marto has a rat-tail tang? My primary goal is to display it and swing it around-- I really cannot see myself oiling a high carbon steel sword every month to prevent rusting (like the Windlass or Albion). The maintenance that battle-ready swords require is kind of a deal-breaker for me. Thanks in advance!

Have you asked the place you plan to buy t from? Totally reasonable question.

Dunno about the Marto sword--like Chris said you could ask the vendor.
I do however, feel a need to at least make a small comment on this:
Honestly mate, this is a bit silly. A proper functional sword is always safer to swing even if you don't cut anything with it, and oiling a sword LITERALLY takes one minute. And it's kind of soothing. How long do you plan to play with your sword every month? Surely you can find one minute to spend caring for it--it's like showing your love. Kind of like petting it, in a not-as-creepy-sounding way.
To each his own, of course, but it seems like your best bet would be to pick up a Windlass Atlantean when they are released soon. Then it would be doubly safe--functional contruction AND unsharpened.

I'd just go for the new Windlass version. Pretty sure it's based on the Marto version, and Windlass always puts that coating on their blades that helps prevent rust. I've had Windlass blades sit for a good while in Florida (where it's pretty humid) with no oil and never even develop a patina.
I think that's about as solid as you'll get without dropping the cash for the Albion version.

Well, a Windlass may very well end up being what I will go for. I'm just waiting to hear a review by someone who actually gets their hands on one-- they're supposed to start shipping this month (October) right? I must say it's a little re-assuring to hear that the oiling/rusting hasn't been much of an issue for you folks.

If I wanted the level of detail of the Albion and I wanted to support our custom guys, absolutely that's what I personally would go for. If I cared about the authenticity, I'd swing for the Albion.
But if I just wanted an Atlantean that could be used/swung around without breaking and wanted to save some cash, Windlass all the way.
I've never cared for a of the Conan swords, so I'd never own one in the first place. But they do look nice.

My thoughts exactly.

Honestly, I don't even think oiling is that important - I prefer to leave my sword the way it is and if it starts to stain a bit I just give it a run with a polishing agent and some fine steel wool. This has the added benefit of making the blade somewhat shinier each time.

A few updates people: I have pretty much confirmed that the Marto Conan swords are full tang. Please see the following emails from MartoArmory (the official Marto website) I also emailed SwordsFromSpain (a big Marto seller): Finally, I found some posts on the official Marto forums: forums.martoarmory.com/showthrea ... nan-swords forums.martoarmory.com/showthrea ... Sword-Info So there you have it folks! The rumors that Marto swords don't have a full tang are simply not true. Not only this, I was surprised to hear the Marto Admin say "Some of the swords, are capable of being into fully functional reenactment swords." (although I definitely wouldn't recommend that).

So... My plan at this point is to wait and see how the Windlass swords shape up when people start receiving them. If they don't live up, then I'm going for a Marto. Thanks all for the help, and I hope this thread clears up things for others.

Hey Paul, I have had the Marto version Atlantean, for about 5 years. It gets oiled twice a year when I do my other swords (force of habit) as it is stainless steel, they do feel very sturdy to hold and I have never felt the grip move at all, But I have never swung it around and never even thought to cut with it. It is purley a display piece in my eyes, but it does that well for the price and I have always liked it. I find it a great sword to let people hold who have no experience with a real sword also is kid safe aside from the weight and point, but once again I tell em it is a display piece and not to swing it about.
