I would recommend the bamboo or the other one, I own a bamboo and its a great sword. The brown one I have been wanting for some time and it looks like a beautiful fantastic sword for the money. For your first sword its nice to have audible feedback to hear when you swing it straight (with the bo-hi) but no bo-hi delivers more forceful blows. At the same time its heavier and cant be moved as quickly. Either way, ll get a great sword to learn with. Keep in mind, your about to get addicted to a world of swords and this will not be your last, so durability is nice, but you will get tougher swords when you wanna spend the extra money on them. Perhaps getting the brown (wave?) sword and gettign an iaito with a bo-hi to rain with. You can still hear a straight swing with a sword with no bo-hi but its not as loud. And honestly after buying a no-hi sword I do very much miss it and I pull out my bamboo all the time just to hear it. Mine has the black saya, I really wish I got the red.
I'm at an impasse, i would love to see a review of the brown sword because its gorgeous, but for a beginner I would say go with a bo-hi.
and ps, tieing sageo gets REALLY easy once you learn to do it. I could do any knot in my sleep nowadays.

Okay, make a good review and maybe I'll pick one of those up myself. I seriously have been in love with that katana since it came out during spring.

As for the swords. I'd still go with a no bo-hi blade. The bo-hi is useful in that it does give you audible feed back on a swing and gives a lighter, easier handling blade. However, I'd take the marginal increase in overall strength that the lack of a hi gives if I'm a beginner.

A few really good Samurai films are:
Yojimbo Sanjuro Seven Samurai The Twilight Samurai Love and Honor
That's a couple more than a few, but all are good. There's also a lot more where they came from.
If you really want to see something awesome, look up the Lone Wolf and Cub series starring Tomasaburo Wakayama. Harsh, brutal films about a harsh, brutal man. Really awesome.
The Zatoichi series is also incredible, as is the 2003 remake starring Beat Takeshi.
The Sleepy Eyes of Death series is also good, violent fun.
Most of these can be found at online viewing sites, as well as torrent sites.

Also, the Samurai Trilogy is about Miyamoto Musashi himself. He is the namesake of the Musashi brand.

I don't want there to be any misinformation, but remember that a fuller doesn't weaken the blade, but add structural integrity while allowing for material to be removed. In the case of sword, this allows for the same amount of stress/strain resistance, while allowing it to be lighter. I'm generalizing, but a fullered sword will be lighter and quicker, and a non fullered one will allow for heavier cuts One article that I though was cool was: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-beam

I remember that discussion. I don't think it was ever properly resolved. The idea is with a fuller and an I beam similar, but not executed the same. I myself believe that a fuller will slightly weaken a blade. I also may be totally wrong.
