Hey guys, I have a friend who can't shoot off the knuckle with his self bow. Usually he just puts a glove on his bow hand but I've seen a couple videos where there is a bracer that has a knuckle guard connected to it.
So I ordered the archery pattern package from tandy thinking that "finger guard" was what I was looking for, but when the pattern came, it looked like their finger guard was just a fancy finger tab.
So do any of you have a pattern for a bracer and knuckle guard combo?

No, but a friend of mine just added a rest for the arrow to his bow. Just a simple piece of wood. As the bow doesn't really bend where you grip it, good epoxy was sufficient to keep it on there. Or this: www.iacbogensport.de/xtc/index.p ... 9f49af6962

I'm not sure how he'd feel about gluing on a piece of wood. I've been trying to show him how I shoot to keep the fletchings from scratching my knuckle, but so far he hasn't gotten it. I did find these tho: www.traditionalbowshop.com/88-y- ... ector.html which is almost exactly what I'm looking for. Well, seeing tho's has given me some rough guidelines on how to make them out of leather and attach them to a bracer. Hopefully I'll be able to finish this and post it here.

That is EXACTLY what I'm looking for... well, exactly the type of thing I am looking to build. I suppose that the best thing to do would be to get some construction paper and treat it like leather... but staples instead of sewing. This is meant to be an X-mas present, so I've got some time to fail on a couple of tries. If it comes down to it, I could always just buy that bracer as a last resort. But thank you for the link. That will really help me muddle my way through the project.

The one change I might would make to that bracer is to have it extend a little higher up on the inside of the arm. On me it only goes up about halfway to my elbow. I did a couple of not so smart things last time I was shooting and nailed myself pretty good. If the bracer would have been about 2 inches longer I wouldn't be sporting a huge rainbow colored bruise on my arm right now.

Well, now you know how not to shoot it Once in a while, I shoot without a bracer to check my technique. If it slaps my arm, I'm doing something wrong.

Yeah, don't try to get fancy pull an arrow quick as you can, draw, nock it and fire. Especially not with a bow you have never shot before and when you're out of practice. But when there are a couple of attractive girls out on the range, intelligence just seems to fly out of the window.

If the leading edge of the fletching is cutting his knuckle, you might also try a drop of fletching glue right there.

Well the crazy thing is that we are both shooting the same arrows. The only difference is that I hold my bow ever so slightly different then he does, which I think is exactly why it doesn't cut me. But he always goes back to holding it the way he will, so...

I had a self bow when I was a kid and it used to cut my knuckle too. The extra drop of glue to the leading edge of the vein so there wasn't so much of a shelf/ridge where it ends helped, but it still cut me.
Now I shoot a longbow with a shelf, so it isn't an issue.
Does he shoot with a broken wrist? I still do, but I recall that my uncle, who taught me to shoot, did not and he didn't get cut shooting the same bow with the same arrows. Might have something to do with it.

I had a wee bit of cutting trouble too whilst shooting my War bow. All I had to do was make my nocking point slightly higher and I haven't had an issue since.

I can see how that might help.
Good point. Funny how many details there can be with a simple stick and a string...
