I had for some time been vaguely aware of Traditional Filipino Weapons as a company with an excellent reputation that, unfortunately, produced blades I found odd looking. Recently I became aware (Through a post here at the forum) they had started making Chinese style swords and I fell in love with their dao. However, in looking over their web site I began to see that I had judged their other weapons, the Filipino "Sandata" too quickly. They have some wonderful complex geometries to the blades and what I took to be odd shaped handles are often nothing less than works of sculpture. I will be buying the dao this coming week, but I did a little computer work for a client this past week and there's a little extra in the sword fund. I should be able to buy a new sword by next month and I've pretty well decided I want to purchase one of these four blades traditionalfilipinoweapons.com/Pinsawali-Janap-Kambantuli-Binakuko-Detail.htmlI'm just looking for thoughts, opinions, any sort of input as to which of these might be better, I'm having a heck of a time pointing at one and saying "This one!" One might have a more attractive handle, another an intriguing blade...I'd appreciate any feedback I can get on this.

Hi Bill, and nice to know that I'm not the only one drooling over these four TFW blades. My vote is for the Janap, as the belly of the blade would make for a good cutter, the point is in line for decent thrusting, and I believe it will have the best geometry for heavier cutting/tool applications. The Kambantuli is sweet looking and has a great handle, but I suspect that the blade is a little thinner overall, especially at the edge, and the point is less suited for thrusting. The thin edge may be more prone to bending if you used it as a tool, say on some wood. The Pinsawali just looks like a cleaver to me, and along with the Binakuko, seems like more of a specialized knife.

So far, with votes from here and my friends and family, I've got three votes for the Janap, one for the Kambantuli, and one for the Binakuko. My concern with the Binakuko is that cool looking belly might make it tricky to cut bottles with, maybe someone with more cutting experience could offer an opinion there, but I think the Binakuko is way cool looking. I also like the Kambantuli, the blade shape is intriguing. The Janap, the handle looks nice and beefy, my big meathooks like the look of that, and the blade looks like it would cut bottles with ease...Oy, it's a good thing I have a month or two to think this over.
Edited to add: Thanks for the responses, sorry, forgot my manners.

I'll add a second vote for the kambantuli. Weird ass name, but it looks sweet as hell. It's one of the few TFWs I've liked past initial wow factor, so if you go for it, I'd love to hear what you think.

I'll vote for kambantuli, just because it has the sexiest blade of all four... but the handle on janap looks better...

Ron, at TFW, seems like a pretty straight forward guy, I wonder if I could just email him and ask his opinion as to which might make the best bottle cutter. Not a guarantee of results, he can't fix my poor cutting, just a personal opinion from someone who's handled the blades.

I'll sure get a Kris as soon as possible, its been a couple of years since i want one, i cant believe i havent pull the trigger yet ! The Panabas looks very interesting in a backyard cutter perspective as the Laring the katipunan and the sansibar have some wicked shapes...

The Panabas looks, to me, difficult to wield. How does it do for cutting?
