Please keep in mind I am very inexperienced with the sword world. I am still learning, so my pros and cons may be due to my lack of knowledge. If you can take the time to explain to me any issues to my comment it would be very much appreciated.
The best part of this sword is the handling. It is light, well balanced, fast, and comfortable. It came packed very well so you don’t have to worry about shipping.
My very first impression is that the scabbard and Viking sword is very simple and functional looking. If you’re looking for fancy, this is not it. For me functional is perfect.
I pulled the sword out of the scabbard, and first thing I looked at and felt was the edge. I was disappointed here. I ran my fingers across the blade and there were a lot of burrs. Not as sharp as I wanted, but then again I am not sure what a properly sharpened sword is, such as a $700 plus Albion. I swiped the blade on my belt sander leather strop. I did get rid of some of the burring but it was late last night and I was tired. Today I plan on really sharpening up this sword properly.
The fuller was the next thing I looked at and it was good except for the rounded area at the tip of the blade. It’s dimpled, on both sides, not nicely finished or routed. It’s slight and can only be seen in that particular angle in the light. Not bad. I don’t think I could ever capture it in the camera. It’s like someone took their thumb and pointer fingers and squeezed the end and produced a dimple. Again, small issue.
Keep in mind for me, a $200.00 dollar exclusive, I expected a little better quality control. This would have been a lot cheaper if this was being sold at Kult of Athena.
The scabbard/sword fit is OK. There is a slight gap on one side, and I tried it both sides. I thought maybe I put it in the wrong way, but same gap on both sides. I may be nitpicking. See on the right side? Small gap.
The hilt, grip, and pommel are excellent. A good design in my opinion. The creator or sword smith who came up with this design back then, was a person who knew what they were doing or knew what they wanted in a sword. The curves of the hilt and pommel, keeps from digging into the hand, and skin. Combined with the leather covered grip, very comfortable, and one of the best features of this sword.
The hilt, pommel and leather covered grip is well done. Simple and functional parts. The only thing I didn’t like was the peen job, but again, I am not sure what a good peen job is. Please decide for yourself as I am including pictures.
The overall blade appearance is pretty good. Comparing the Irish Viking to my Tinker Viking, the blade seems small, and thin. I was thinking the blade was wide and longer, but I guess the overall design is made to be this way for is awesome handling.
SO the big part of this sword is the functional handling and cutting, which is what I really like!!!
It handles great but I am no expert or have any martial arts training. I am only going by lots of You Tube vids, and common sense. The swings are manageable, fast and recoverable.
Last night I did manage to cut up two single sletzer bottles. It was late and I was tired, but the first swing surprised me because it cut like butter, made that Shwinng sound when it cut, and the bottom half of the bottle stayed up on the table filled half way with water. I thought, hmmm pretty cool. I tried one more bottle and expereinced the same thing. No batting, or brtual half way cut. But i did give it a nice firm swing.
The Irish Viking cut better than I thought, since the edge was not to good.
This morning, just to confirm and out of curiosity, I filled up two seltzer water bottles, put them side by side and let er rip. AWESOME!
Two in a row. Nice. Again an excellent handler. I guess overall 4 stars in my opinion.
Good luck with your decision and purchase. If you have any other questions please ask them I will do my best to asnwear then with the limited knowledge I know. If you want more specific pics, please ask and I will post them up for you.
