Was never a fan of the old franchise, will never be a fan of the new.

This new sword is too cartoony- like something out of He Man. The old one was just plain better all around, more fierce, hefty yet elegant, a work of art and a wicked sword. This new one looks like a blocky mis-proportioned haloween costume toy.

Exactly. It literally looks like something found in the Halloween section of a discount retail store. Plastic and all.
This is ignoring the cast etc. of the new franchise. At least I had some respect for the original guys.

I'm looking forward to the movie, but then again, that's 'cause I wasn't impressed with Arnold in the original; however, I'm really not a fan of the sword. If the pommel were larger, the guard smaller (thickness wise, not length wise), the fuller extending into the hilt, and the grip made ovular or hexagonal instead of round and it'd probably be a pretty decent, anachronistic, but still viable, bastard sword. After all, the pommel really resembles a Type N or O, the guard a Style 4, while the blade seems to be a mixture of Xa (the near full length fuller and what appears to be a slight hexagonal cross-section near the tip) and XIII (the broadness of the blade and the fact that it looks a little short for a bastard).

We sure dont know much about the new movie, but one thing good is the fact that it seems to cover more aspects inherent to the world of Conan that they did in the first movie ( the barbarian, cause the destroyer never existed ). Still... that sword is incredibly ugly, i cant believe that they settle for this. My faith in Hollywood in the past ten years is at an all time low, so i dont expect a good movie out of this, not at all.

Well analyzed but to put it more simply: "If it were a different sword altogether..."

you know,i actually dont mind the blade at all,and i like the flared shoulders, but thats pretty much it,the gaurd, hilt and pommel are hideous,im suprised due to the fame of the atlantean you would think that they would at least try and do something that captures the awesomness of the original i dont like the blade finish either,it looks very badly cared for,no self respecting cimmerian would let his blade get into a state like that, the more i think of it the more crap it looks :geek:

The thing that gets me is the oversized guard. Not that I mind heavy guards on fantasy swords - the original Atlantean sword from the old franchise wasn't exactly subtle in that regard. It's more of a proportional thing. On this sword, the guard looks too big in relation to the rest of the weapon.
Otherwise, it doesn't look as bad as I had first thought it would. The blade and hilt certainly has a bit of Samson over it.
As for the movie itself... eh, I'll wait until I see it before I pass judgement. Nothing I've seen about it so far suggests it going to be straight up aweful, anyway. And as much as I love the original, let's be brutally honest for a while - it was a terrible adaption of Robert E Howard's Conan stories. Ahnuld was wrong for the part in almost every way, for starters, and the plot borrows a lot more from the origins of Howard's first barbarian hero Kull.
Heck, that movie being as good as it is can be considered a miracle considering the circumstances. Pretty much the only thing they really got right was the score and the production design. Everything else had more to do with with the stars being right and the planets aligning then the effort put into the production. For crying out loud, Max von Sydow signed up on a whim because he was bored. And they hired an Austrian bodybuilder for the lead role and a surfer with zero acting experience for a major supporting character. And yet when Conan and Subotai talk, their wooden acting somehow synchs via some sort of weird acting alchemy and it actually sounds believable - like that's how the characters are supposed to sound. And the entire movie is like that!
The less this new movie tries to approach the old one the better, is what I'm basically saying, because the old Conan movie is some sort of anomaly that defied all probability. They're really better off trying to recreate Howard's original vision, and I hope the succeed.

No offense, but I suspect that bringing up the Oakeshott Typology in conjunction with Conan the Barbarian counts as some form of heresy. Anyway, if I'd try to fix this sword, I think I would increase the size of the pommel by about 20%, shorten the quillions by about 50%, and make the guard in the same bronze as the rest of the hilt furniture. Something like this: Much better.

I despise the new sword... it looks like some huge awful LARP weapon or Prop/Toy Sword... just bad.

Frankly I am a little surprised that Albion is even making this thing. Looks like a cartoonish Kurgan sword.

What the hell is up with the finish on that thing! One inescapable truth to any sword is an even finish!! I can't concieve of any sword maker in the history of the omniverse leaving a sword with such an uneven finish. I'm not talking about polish or shine, but the damn thing should be uniform.

it would be impossible to get to the same level as the old conan swords, but from albion i'd expected something better.

Blej....that's an ugly mother. I thought Lord of the Rings had permanently raised the bar regarding fantasy movie swords

I'm actually a bigfan of conan. I've got issue 15 up to 260 ofthe marvel series plus all the king conan issues and also afew annuals and conan sagas.
anyway the new movie kinda interests me. I was surprised to see the guy that played khal drogo playing conan, drogos badass barbarian so I'm sure he'll do conan justice.
on the sword, I agree its too cartoony. I always pictured hyborian swords being more viking like. also giving conan a signature sword kinda goes against the character. in the books and comics conan went through swords like he went through enemies, wine, and women. the best conan sword wasthe one he took from you and cleaved you in half to thank you for it!
by the way a little trivia. did you know that the he-man toy line was actually made for the original conan movie? mattel dropped the conan licensing due to the R rated film and created the he-man story arc to sell the toys.

Expecting better from Albion isn't out of line, but temper your thoughts with the knowledge that Albion is in business to make money. In all likelyhood, they may have been approached to do the film swords before any real concrete design had been hashed out, and subsequently may be at the mercy of the designer, director, producer, or whoever is calling the shots on the weapons appearances. Considering the monetary gain available, if you had the facility to produce what was requested, would you refuse on the grounds that you thought it looked wrong, or silly, or cartoonish? It is possible that the versions we are pooh poohing, are toned down verisons of some hideous fantasy cleaver that Albions people managed to convince the production company would look corny.
That said, the new Conan blade looks like a train wreck.
