A friend of mine just showed me what I will laughingly call a sword that her parents brought back from India, supposidly given to them by some sort of Indian mystic. It's a long straight piece of iron that is pointed but it's very thick and has no edge at all. It is pointed though. It didn't look like stainless steel. I'd post a photo except that a) it was really dark and the photo didn't come out too well, and b) I don't know how to post photos here. The hilt looks like a typical european sword with a pommel. There is an abstract design on the blade, sort of like a DNA helix. Anyone hear of anything like this before?

I tried to post a response to this thread earlier, but my phone couldn't send the post; kept getting a "page not available" thingies. Anyway, I can't remember the name, but there is a sword that sounds kind of like what you might have seen, that, if memory serves, is some sort of Hindu religious object. I'll try to look one up, give me a few minutes. Edit: the sword I'm thinking of is the khanda. Here's a nice example: www.oriental-arms.com/item.php?id=3737Look anything like this?

Maybe, not exactly. It doesn't have a basket hilt and the blade isn't that broad. More like an oversized fencing foil, the way the blade is so square and rectangular.
I like your theory that it's some sort of Khanda though and probably a Kathakali dance sword as I can't envision this thing was ever intended for actual combat.

It's most likely something to the same effect; these things could vary by region and purpose. It'd be nice to see a picture... On that note, all you have to do is host the image on, say, photobucket or imageshack and copy the URL, then paste it into your post and stick image tags around it. ( I think there's an option in the full post editor thingy to attach an image, too, but I don't use that often. I've seen others do it, though.

You're right, that is horribly dark. I've done some halfass tweaking in a lousy image editor to see what I could bring out, but all I've got is this: Still can't get a very good view of the hilt, but you're right, that is a much narrower blade than the one I linked. There was a really good site full of all kinds of Indian swords posted either here or on the old forum, I just wish I could remember what it was called... I'll do some digging.
