You've got a very twisted world perspective, then. The Inheritance Cycle is intended for young adults and Paolini started writing in middle school, same as I did, so of course it's going to be geared more towards a middle school mind set. Sure, the first book may sound like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars had an LSD fueled love child at Woodstock, but if you can accept that, it's still an enjoyable debut novel, 'debut' being the keyword here.
Meyer, on the other hand, is a hack who ruined an entire genre forever. She did to vampires what the Nazis did to the swastika. She did it shamelessly, knowingly, and didn't give a damn. She also became a best seller solely by catering to vapid high school girls who think that love is having an abusive boyfriend who's attractive and having the personality of a doormat. In fact, her novel was rejected something like 8 times before one publisher took pity on her.
You cannot compare the two.

Also, Paolini has improved his writing, each book is subsequently better than the first.
Meyer's writing, if anything, has gotten worse.
As for Debut novels, even Elantris, by Brandon Sanderson is nowhere near as good as his latest The Way of Kings. Although, that said, Elantris was good enough for RJ to select him to finish WoT. (Best decision RJ ever made)
Of course, no modern writer compares to Sanderson's work ethic. 2-3 Books published per year, no drop in quality and he's an absolute machine. Each new series has incredibly sophisticated magic systems. Some interlinked, others stand-alone, but regardless, it's absolutely amazing.

Actually, Way of Kings was written mostly before Elantris was even conceptualized, though I agree. Not only are his magic systems sophisticated, they're all unique. Sure, that of Elantris, what with drawing a formula, has been done before, but not in that manner. I'd never even considered something like Biochroma before Warbreaker and that's saying nothing of Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy; I think those last three are his shining achievements in his magic systems, since he made three completely distinct systems while using the exact same basis.
Also, it looks as though there's going to be two new trilogies in the Mistborn universe; Alloy of Law is a stand alone short novel not to be included in those. I'm also curious since he mentioned he'd optioned the rights for a Mistborn movie.

TWoK was plotted for many many years. It was actually written recently. It's a subtle difference, he held off actually writing it until he felt that he was capable of it.
And I am a big fan of his hardline rules with magic. Keep in mind however that all the TWoK, Mistborn, Elantris and Warbreaker worlds are part of Adolisium (sp?) and their magic systems are inter-related. Being Shard based magics.
It will be interesting to see more depth in the magic systems in tWoK, since, while we know of a few, he's said that there's quite a few that haven't been shown yet. And the ones we have seen haven't been shown with the in depth Mastery that Vin and Kelsier had.

Speaking of Paolini does anyone know when the next book will be coming out?

Ah, good point. That's true. I've been trying to come up with some hardline rules for my own systems in two of the books I'm planning, but having little luck. Granted, the second system was made up somewhat on the fly to replace something that I just couldn't work with; plus, the book is a mishmash of three other failed products. I suppose it'd be more appropriate to say it's just something I tinker with when I'm having no luck working on my other projects or having writer's block on my main work; which is happening increasingly, I hate to say. Indeed. I can't wait to see more of Surgebinding in use. john: Inheritance, i.e., Book 4, is set to come out November 8, 2011; coincidentally, Mistborn: Alloy of Law comes out the same day.

Haha. I know the feeling. The last one was published in '08. Mind, Eldest was published 3 years after Eragon and Brisingr 3 years after Eldest, but considering Inheritance and Brisingr were originally the same book, you'd think it would've taken less time. Ah, well, it'll be out soon enough.

Not a problem. I don't watch TV or visit bookstores that often, so my only way of finding new books is by browsing Amazon.
