This will be a short and sweet review since I'm not feeling good but I wanted to share.
I saw this beauty in the classifieds and it tortured me for 3 weeks. Then I had a little extra $ so guess what I did with it.
Beautiful , elegant, I like the whole blue theme.
Tsuka is very skinny compared to most swords. It almost doesnt feel substantial enough. It took me a while to get used to the skinniness. Compared to my Nami iaito you can see the big difference. But I like it. I have short stubby fingers so it works for me. I dont know what it is about this sword but we "clicked" right away. Even with it being 28 inch blade ( an inch longer than what I'm used to training with) i find myself quite comfortable with it. It is a bit tip heavy but not as bad as my SBG custom. She is still pretty lively. It might be due to the tsuka being so thin and light.
I love the little butterflies on the tsuba.
Pretty folding in the blade. Yes those are rust spots. They were there before Wes owned it.
I love the saya. Its different and I like it. Its thinner than most Hanwei sayas. Which is comfortable for me. unfortunately the blade rattles around like crazy inside.
Specs borrowed from Hanwei website.
Orchid Katana
MSRP: $1,599.00 ( )
Overall: 40 1/2“
Blade Length: 28“ folded K120C
Handle Length: 11 1/2”
Weight: 2lb 3oz
Point of Balance: 6"
Width at Guard: 1.17"
Width at Tip: .82"
Thickness at Guard: .24"
Thickness at Tip: .17"
Sori: 3/4"
I'll say im pretty happy about this one. I havent cut anything with it yet. Those scratches were there already.
Pros- Beautiful, little bit different from the norm, feels like it was made for people with small hands which is a pro for me, pretty folding in the blade
Cons-tip likes to rattle around in the saya, habaki sticks out above the mune so it gets hung up on the edge of the koiguchi. Not a huge deal i just have to remember to lift it up a little bit. rust spots on the blade but im sure that can be fixed. Weird spot left behind on the saya finish from the sageo after I untied it again not a big deal.
