1 bale of straw hay: $5
1 roll of duct tape: $2
1 Affordable, clean, easy archer target?: about $7
Alright, so I know some of you might be thinking "why not just get a bunch of cardboard and tape it together" Well, the problem I've run into with that is collecting all the cardboard. I already got yelled at once by the caretaker of the local recycling center for dumpster diving.
I also got one of tho's closed cell styrofoam archery cubes for X-mas, but they tend to leak small bits of foam everywhere.
Concentional hay eventually falls apart and isn't to portable.
I've tried stuffing a box with grocery bags, but you'd have no idea how many grocery bags it took to make a dense enough material to stop an arrow.
So I decided to take ALL tho's ideas and combine them into one. (damn, I really wish I'd have snapped a picture of it... I'll remember to do that next time)
But the bale of hay lost around 20% of it's volume when totally encased in duct tape. This not only keeps the hay from getting everywhere when you toss it in your car, but it also compresses the hay to give you better arrow stopping power.
I'm currently only using a 45lb longbow, and so far, not one has come close to going all the way through. I plan on making a couple more of these to place at various distances, or maybe even dress one up. All 3 of the targets are currently at my friend's house, but I plan on adding in a handy-dandy duct tape carrying handle when I go back there tomorrow.
As with other duct tape creations, you only have to apply a strip of tape to any area that has a large enough hole in it to allow the hay out.
I hope this helps someone out there.
