First off, Musashi is going through a brand name change to Musha, if you buy one of their swords, you may get one marked Musashi, or Musha as they have mixed stock.
Now, this is my first practical katana, but far from my first sword or bladed weapon. When i took it out of the box, I could immediately tell the difference between it and my wall hanger decorative katana. Not only was the weight more distributed, the, blade was thicker, and the sword was overall heavier - a bout 2-3 lbs total, I'm guessing.
This sword is beautiful, but does not sacrifice quality for aesthetics. The saya have dragons carved into it, but the blade is exactly the same as the model from which it was derived(the one without the carvings). The blade is tight, and razor sharp right out of the box. The ito is wrapped tightly, and the tsuba is on tightly. In short, the sword is constructed just fine. It sits perfectly in its saya, but is not overly difficult to remove.
The katana handles very well, and within a couple minutes of holding it, I was able to do some of the swings and combos that I could do with my friends much lighter katana. It was time for my favorite part of getting a new sword - the cut test! Every bottle it touched was laid to waste. Do not be pout off by this swords lower price tag, it is excellent.
Also, the sword came with a neat cloth carrying bag. It's great for protecting the saya, as well as concealing the sword in general for transport. I doubt this will be my last purchase from Musashi/Musha.
