Yup, I'm the lucky owner of it. I wanted a sword that had similar lines to the Windlass Raven Claw Fighting Knife but with a darker twist to them. Since I happen to be very interested in Celtic mythology and symbolism, Morrigan and ravens seemed to be a perfect match for it.

Ah, so that's the inspiration for it! Yeah, I've always really liked the aesthetics of the RCFK, but I never thought about making a sword to go with it.

I think it is a more realistic version of the elfvern sabre from LoTR I hate that it had no guard. but 14th yours pulls it off brilliantly.

I have to agree.
While I always thought that Hadhafang was a neat blade, there was always something a bit off about it. After seeing the Morrigan blade, the guard is what was missing.
I would like a bit longer grip on it at the expense of maybe having to sacrifice some blade length to balance it, but overall, that is one damned handsome piece of steel 14th.

Deepbluedave: Thanks for the compliment. I always liked hadrafang but didn't like its lack of a guard chuckinohio: The angle the sword is at in that picture is a bit deceptive. The handle is 9 1/2 - 10". I have giant meat paws for hands and I can comfortably use a two handed grip. For me at least, its a good compromise between grip and blade length. The grip to blade length of Morrigan's Talon is almost identical to Windlass' Raptor sword. There is no comparison between the two but it should give you a better feel about the lengths.

I just picture my hand slipping onto the blade... or another blade sliding down the blade during a parry and cutting my fingers off... guards serve a purpose beyond their appearance.... its right there in the name. "Guard".

Hadhafang actually has a long ricasso-like section, presumably to allow two-handing it. Strangely, it seems to have some form of false edge in front of the spur at the top of the blade which acts like a mini-guard...

It is more then enough to do its job... it keeps your hands from sliding onto the blade... and with a blade as sharp as a traditional katana, that's a good thing for your hands... also its enough of a block that on a parry or bind the oppoents blade while sliding down yours will it the tsuba, and not your hands. Without the tsuba, you'd be in a world of hurt.

Really large, fanciful guards can be attractive... some like em, some don't... but they do not need to be too big to do what they need to do, and they can get in your way yeah.

im really concerned about the custom one im having cast now, its 12 inches across for my 36 inch fantasy sword. but i had to make it that way or it wouldnt look correct and since its a fantasy sword i guess ill display it more than use it anyway.

The guard on Morrigan's Talon is just right by my standards, it's just long enough to protect my hand from a blow sliding down the blade and isn't so large it adds much weight or makes it awkward.

The guard on your sword is exactly what I have designed for a pair of long daggers I want a custom maker to make... love that style.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing the design for them. Morrigan's Talon started out as a companion piece to the Windlass Raven Claw Fighting Knives. Personally I think she turned out much better, but it nice to have a sword that goes well with those daggers.
I don't know if you have read Steven Erikson's Malazaan Books of the Fallen series, but the Raven Claw knives are what I pictured when I thought about Kalam Mekhars knives would look like. I strongly recommend the series if you haven't read it. There are several weapons in it that have important histories and play key roles in the books. At some point, I need to have Brendan make Dragnipur for me. That sword is all kinds of bad a** in the books.

i would have this sword (the one on top)[a href=" "] [/a] the handle is two handed, just for the scale. i would want it to be made by odinblades, in the same black damascus/dark silver color scheme as the celtic wolf. [a href=" "] [/a]
