i'm interested in a weapon that would fall between a knife and a sword. something that was designed for unarmored combat, since armor was no longer in use.
was there such a weapon that had some popularity in the 17-19th century?

You are probably looking for the flint lock pistol. As far as a bladed weapon is concerned tho, you might be thinking of a small sword? It's more on the sword side then the knife side, but a small sword came around in the 1660s or so and soon became very popular. Here's a link to one so you can see the general theme behind the blade: kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=CS88CLMSIt was light, quick and pointy. Not much of a cutting weapon, but I do know that a draw cut was possible with some as the edges were sometimes sharpened. Was this what you had in mind?

Briquet, I think, was around that early.

after looking around, i think a naval dirk is what i'm looking for. around 16" blade would be nice. since the cold steel is discontinued, is there something that would be suitable?
