Been a long time. Moderators, if I'm not supposed to put my sketches here, just drop me a note or go ahead and boot it... First two older drawings. Sorry about the way the pictures are tilted; I really need to get either a bigger scanner or a smaller sketchbook! Then here's a design I've been toying with, a saber I drew a while ago... I've been tracing this blade and giving it different treatments, slightly spun off of Japanese blade styles because they're convenient to work with. Might go with Western-style fullering too. Who knows; we'll see. Hira: Shobu: Shinogi: I also have a pair of knives I sketched out. For all that LOTR is a medieval-ish society, you never see what the Elves eat with, do you? So... And then you also don't see anything else as far as knives go, beside the two little knives they give Merry and Pippin, Legolas' twin knives and Aragorn's hunting knife, so why not play around a little? Enjoy, peeps!

Wow man, you're seriously talented with a pencil. I like the leaf blade and the elvish 'eating knife'

I'm really digging that Shobu saber, Jeff.

Also- the Hira style, with a western splash to it, might work for Seanchan?

Perhaps, though you'd need a longer hilt; it's been awhile since I've read the WoT books (waiting for AMoL to come out), but I believe the Seanchan sabers were described as being hand-and-a-half.

Specifically makes no mention of the hilt length, but does describe Rand struggling to adjust to the High Lord's forms, and thought my "The Great Hunt' is not at my side (my re-read for AMoL is postponed, wife got me Fallout: New Vegas, been having mindless fun) my memory says it's because of his grip/stance. Also, that hira could provide a two handed length, albeit it you would need to adjust stance and form to make it work, and would provide for the oddness Rand experienced.

Just a quick note to say that I cut out a blank for the hira in poplar for display. Still divided on whether or not to go with the narrow fuller the original sketch has, but the blank turned out much bigger than I planned... it's about an inch longer than the Albrecht waster, and the blade is ~2.5" wide! The grip is also around 8" long, but the curve makes it so that my two hands can fit comfortably enough on the grip. Once I fill it out with some wood it might get a little bulkier, but for now... whoopee

I second that. I tend to look through through both your and Luna's drawings a lot.
Really very nice.

Not that much of a clan right now I gotta scan them. Give me a few days... and bear in mind these are SKETCHES, they're literally 15-minute scribbles... but thanks for the support

Bah, your 15 minute scribbles are better than my 15 hours of trying to design them I bet

Hi guys! So I've been taking a bash at that hira-zukuri saber design. Did a blank in wood and gave it a nice bevel (poplar cuts away so beautifully at 30,000 rpm and 36 grit, doesn't it?); still need to do a proper mune, but anyway. Been looking at the design and thinking, hmmmm. It sorta looks like a long dao, doesn't it? The Seanchan are foreign, Asiatic styled compared to the more European Randlanders... soooo... why not use some Asiatic inspiration on the design? Enter the 'tunkou'. This is a fitting on higher quality dao and jian that performs approximately the same function as the habaki on Japanese swords-- helping keep the blade tight in the scabbard. They're often fairly plain, but you know me and my love of detail... (this is the saber in question, btw; I've elongated the grip a tad and it kind of came out... almost 48" long?!) The idea is that, inside the scabbard, it hangs edge-down at the belt and this is on the inside, but when drawn, this side faces your opponent (if you're a righty anyway): The 'outside' when worn and 'inside' when in hand will be a chora leaf with vines rather than this grim motif with its thorns. Speaking of which, I've developed a sudden interest in Seanchan motifs... would a chora be appropriate, hmm? Or rather something else? Your thoughts are welcome!

A hawk clutching lightning bolts might fit better for one of the High Blood. And they still used the Heron Mark there too. Ravens were popular, and their Tower icons for seekers and the like.

The idea though is that this is sort of an allegorical work... 'life' on the outside of the blade when it's being worn and thus harmless, 'death' on the outside when it's ready to strike. That's why I was thinking a chora leaf, or perhaps Avensdoraldera...
This isn't necessarily a Blood sword; more like a officer's sword.
Good points on the motifs though! I'll have to remember those.
Hmm, did the Deathwatch have any motif beside their green and red armour? I know they had raven tattoos...

And Jeremy, while you're around (not that the list of members shows you're here, but whatev ): First sketch: A grip I started knocking out with the wolf heads: Then a quick sketch of the mate, with a little spear-head as a bonus: Those last two are halved because, well, half the work That and it's a pain to try and make them symmetrical! Like I said, just 15-minute doodles...

I have to say, I really quite like the look of those thorns for that saber.
Gorgeous.
