Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to The Archive. Previously, this was my one and only design thread, but after three and a half years of posts, many of them redesigns of older works, it has gotten bloated beyond belief. In addition, thanks to the forum migration circa February 2013, images quit scaling automatically, so my often several thousand-pixel long designs were chopped off to the point where only the tips were visible; also, the same migration broke the links at the bottom of this post, making it even harder to jump to a specific design. Long story short, it would have meant a lot of work that I just wasn't looking forward to doing, as it would be simpler to just start over. However, for posterity's sake, I'll be leaving this thread open for those who'd like to see the evolution of my designs.
To view these designs in full, right click on them and select "View Image".
Overall Length: 34 1/2" Blade Length: 26" Grip Length: 4" (5 1/4" including the spacers) Guard Width: 3 1/2"
The inscription it bears reads (in a script of my own invention): I am Ithin, Harbinger of the Night's End.
Ithin is my prize project and I am constantly trying to improve its design. Ithin is a fantasy cutlass forged by the Ororan swordmsith Soratha for a commodore from Mashal; the sword was completed three days into the nightmarish Forever Night, a time when monsters walk the earth, killing with impunity. In the hopes that the time would soon be over for another 500 years, she named it Ithin, which is Sindarin for the heraldic symbol of the crescent moon; in this case, a waning moon, as the waning moons symbolize the end of the Forever Night. The Mashaln commodore carried Ithin for several years through a successful naval career until he was captured and slain by pirates. Ithin was then sold to a weapon merchant in Estrella, a very successful island trading port known for its seedier customers, where it rested for nigh on a decade until my protagonist, Vega, walked into the shop. Interestingly enough, Vega was born the day after this sword was completed half way across the world.
Overall Length: 43" Blade length: 33" Grip Length: 7" Guard Width: 8 1/2"
The inscription it bears reads (in a script of my own invention): I am Mé'aré, Banisher of the Forever Night.
Mé'aré is a hand-and-a-half sword commissioned by the Lucarian emperor Dalun for his firstborn son's 13th birthday to celebrate him becoming a man. It was forged by Soratha, the same swordsmith who would later forge Ithin, some six years prior to the Forever Night. Oror had once been a powerful nation, but had been decimated in the previous Night, never really recovering, so its people are often fearful of the time; as a result, Soratha forged this sword in the hopes that, when the next one came about, it would be put to use slaying the creatures that killed mankind. With that, it was named Mé'aré, which loosely means "To Light the Day", a prayer of sorts that it would do just that. Because of the shared hopes that went into them, Mé'aré and Ithin are brother swords. When Dalun's son was 15, he died on account of his own recklessness, so Mé'aré was locked away until it was eventually passed onto his second son, Lunæon, who is, ironically enough, the primary antagonist of the book.
Overall Length: 32 1/2" Blade Length: 26 1/2" Grip Length: 3 3/4" Guard Width: 2 1/8"
Ælfwing is the sword of the infamous criminal Corvidus, a man known for wearing the third metacarpal (the bone in your palm connected to your middle finger) of defeated enemies around his wrists as bracers as a psychological tactic. He is also known as Hook, owing to the large bladed hook in place of his left hand, which he lost to a Sentinel (an organization similar to state police in the real world). Due to only having one hand, it's obvious he should have a one handed sword, so I based this blade in part off the Albion Gallowglass, because I think it looks elegant, yet capable of mean hacking blows. The name is a corruption of the Anglo-Saxon Ælfwig or "elf battle"; by the way, this is where the English surname "Alvey" comes from. Overall, I was aiming for a slender, graceful sword similar to a lightsaber. However, the design underwent quite a few changes and ended up being a mixture of Chinese and Celtic designs, namely the Han jian style guard & scabbard, as well as the ring pommel and XIX blade.
Overall Length: 34 13/16" Blade Length: 27 5/8" Grip Length: 4" Guard Width: 6"
Ifearnán is the sword of Seraphina, a former sky pirate queen who settled in quite happily as the first mate of infamous pirate king Corvidus after her ship, The Red Lady was sunk. Ifearnán was her weapon of choice during her relatively long career and carried it even after Corvidus left piracy.
Overall Length: 35" Blade Length: 28" Grip Length: 4" Guard Width: 6"
Iomhair is the "sister" sword to Ifearnán, much in the way that its owner, Eira, is the much younger sister to Seraphina (there's a 14 year gap between the two). Eira, being only about 20, is something of a boisterous, tomboyish girl, but has a great deal of respect for her elders, particularly her big sister, who went into piracy to provide a better life for Eira than she could have otherwise. Despite her sister's wishes, Eira joined the crew of the Corvus Bennetti, the flagship of the pirate king Corvidus' flaship.
Overall Length: 47 7/8" Blade Length: 36" Grip Length: 10" Guard Width: 4"
Wyrmfell started as a redesign of a realistic interpretation of the Dragonslayer from Berserk; however, completely unbidden, I had an idea for a story in which this sword would be carried by the protagonist and I developed that idea and worked it into my existing cosmology quite nicely (all the worlds I create exist in the same universe; same solar system, in fact). Anyways, the story, tentatively titled Dragon Fall, takes place in what is more or less a low-medieval fantasy with one exception: here there be dragons. Rather than being magical beings, they're simply winged reptilian creatures that grew enormous through a rapid mutation in order to survive the harsh environment they were subjected to. I won't go into the dragonology I've started developing for this world, because that would take too much space. The protagonist of Dragon Fall is Miria Luan, a swordswoman of some renown, who carries Wyrmfell & Drake, its little brother. More importantly than her ability with a sword, however, is her status as a Hunter, which is a sort of catch-all profession: they'll do anything from finding lost cats to assassinating politicians, but their original, and primary, purpose is hunting dragons; because of this last bit, they're seen as folk heroes, since dragons occasionally ravage villages. Miria dubbed her sword Wyrmfell after using it to (accidentally) decapitate a particularly nasty dragon in one swing, something that was only possible because of its large size in comparison to contemporary weapons during her time period (long swords are generally bastard swords, the blades of which max out at 30").
Overall Length: 27 1/4" Blade Length: 22" Grip Length: 3 1/2" Guard Width: 4"
Drake is the smaller counterpart to Wyrmfell, also used by Miria Luan, the protagonist of Dragon Fall. It's meant primarily for fighting human opponents, but only when she doesn't have the room to swing Wyrmfell properly, as she has no qualms about whipping out a sword with a reach nearly twice that of her opponent's. However, against one of the smaller breeds of dragon, it serves as the perfect blade for the coup de grâce; despite hunting and regularly killing dragons, she prefers not to make them suffer.
NON-NOVEL DESIGNS:
Overall Length: 43" Blade Length: 31" Grip Length: 9 1/16" Guard Width: 5"
Stigandr, a Norse name meaning "Wanderer", is the answer to a dilemma I faced concerning one of my novels. What would be the most intuitive style of sword for someone to be able to pick up and be able to achieve a relative amount of proficiency in a relatively short period of time? A two-handed sword with a single edge. Why two-handed? When you have both hands on a weapon, you have greater control than with a one-handed sword, and you also don't have to worry about cutting your off hand during a swing. Why a single edge? As someone with no formal training at all, I can't tell you how many times I've hit myself with the short edge of my waster during practice. With only a single edge, that's half as many edges you have to keep track of.
Harvey's Sword is a nameless sword that came about while trying to find a sword suitable for the character to wield. I wanted something somewhat brutish, but still refined, as an opposite to the sophisticated sword his rival, Kagen, wields (a shashka with horn grips and an engraved silver bolster and pommel). I toyed around with something that had the geometry of an axe since it was originally supposed to be an execution sword to better play into the story, but I discarded after clapping eyes on the Hanwei Military Dadao for what must have been the dozenth time. It was perfect for what I needed: it was brutish, but watching it being wielded in a traditional kung fu form, it looked like poetry in motion. This is the MOK rendered version of my design; the original sketch (poor proportions and all) can be found here, along with more information about the in world history of this sword.
Overall Length: 47" Blade Length: 36" Grip Length: 8" Guard Width: 6"
Vakha'Eket is a design closely interwoven with Ælfwing, as Vakha'Eket literally means "Guardian Saber"; Guardians are what I called the Sentinels before they were Sentinels. During a clash with a Sentinel who went on to become a Warder (another Order in the Brotherhood of the Orders; there are Guardians, Sentinels, and Warders in the regular chain of command while Preservers and Conservators are outside that chain. These five Orders make up the Brotherhood), Corvidus lost his hand, almost directly leading to the forging of Ælfwing. In world, the concept behind the Vakha'Eket was a simple one; it's the standard issue saber given to each Sentinel and so should be utilitarian and plain, with only a modicum of decoration to serve as a badge of office. This, however, was before I decided that, rather than force an elite fighting force to conform to a single weapon, each should learn a variety of weapons and eventually choose the one they are best with. Cade, a new Sentinel, now wields the VA Warder while his partner, senior, and childhood friend, Liliam, wields the Hanwei Praying Mantis. The original sketch can be seen here.
