Picked up a Ruger 10/22 tonight, black synthetic stock. Feels great in hand, perfect length of pull IMO, real lightweight too. Cannot wait to take it to the range!!!

cool. very popular, very customizable, cheap to shoot. etc. I never warmed up to them though. Its possible the one that I fired just didn't "click" with me, I couldn't hit a darn thing with it. One semi auto .22 I had fun shooting was the Remington Nylon 66. Just don't ever take it apart

Hah,
I drug a Nylon 66 through the woods with me for years. That rifle accounted for more Raccoons than I care to remember. It was given to me by my Grandfather after I was promoted from Dog chasing, burlap bag carrying, carcass fetcher. I still had to do all those things, but I got to carry my Remington while I did it. A brick of yellow jackets used to cost like $4, and we used to get $20 to $25 per raccoon pelt. I also remember getting $7 per muskrat. Ahhhh, the good ole days.

I know a guy that still traps. I think muskrats. I dont know how much he gets for them though. My 66 experience was a fun afternoon. My little sister's old boyfriend (I wished they were still together, her current one is a gangsta wanna be wuss) had us over for shooting. His dad, my dad, him and I were shooting clays. It was fun bonding time with Dad. One of them brought out the 66 and I had a ball with it. My little sister was deathly afraid of it but I finally talked her into shooting with it and once she got comfortable enough she loved it too!

The rat market is almost nonexistent now as far as I know. My above reminisences were from the mid and late 70's

Nope, I talked to a friend, and you were probably correct. I spoke from ignorance.
He says that he was getting around $5 apiece for rats last year, and expects to get the same or a bit more this year. Your friend probably does pretty good trapping Muskrats.

Love my 10/22 stainless with a black stock. I have put bricks through mine and it is still fun to shoot. I have several extended mags and can really waste ammo fast. Lots of fun let us know how it shoots.

There are a lot of after-market products for your 10/22--replacement stocks, barrels, trigger groups, extended mag releases... Check out Cabela's for all kinds of fun stuff: 10/22 Accessories. Someone got creative with this Gatling Gun Kit!Maybe next Christmas!

Gratz on your new firearm. The 10/22 is about as versatile a .22 as you could wish for. If they don't make it for the 10/22, you probably don't need it. Have fun and happy holidays!!

Great choice Sam. IMO everyone should have at least one 10/22. They are just so versatile. If you decide to change the sights to a ghost ring setup, check out this offering from XS Sight Systems. I have this setup on two 10/22s (a standard model and a heavy-barrel) and absolutely love them. xssights.com/store/rifle.htmlJust select "Ruger 10/22 - RU-0001-5" in the pulldown. They retail for $90, but they're well worth it if you want something faster than the factory sight setup. Oh yeah, my advice is to buy lots of extra magazines. 20300 rounds loaded in magazines = a great afternoon at the range. BOOYAA!!!

20,300 rounds? Is this a base-10 number or quarnary (base-4)? What are some good after-market mags for the 10/22? Plastic or steel lips?

It just doesn't get much better than a 10/22. After having been without one for a few years I recently bought the factory "target model" with the laminated stock and bull barrel. I've added a cheap scope, a Volquartsen trigger, and a few other minor tweaks. This is one of the targets I shot recently (before the winter rains set in). Match grade, field grade, or completely beat up - there are very few firearms as fun to shoot as a 10/22.
