I have been a member of this forum for a while and for the most part I think the mods have done a wonderful job. I understand that we are all human and as such acting on personal feelings is inevitable. However, this doesn't mean that each of cannot learn from these instances. Calling into question the motives and actions of certain mod actions is for some reason taboo. Why is that exactly?
The one main problem I see from all this is interpretation. The rule is no politics and no religion. So who decides where to draw the lines? Marc had it right in his earlier post where he basically said it would be crazy trying to determine such things. So what to do? Well that was answered as well. The good judgement of the mods must play a part here, BUT, that part MUST be unbiased. Fact of the matter is that almost everything can be politicized in one way or another. The problem is when the mod has PERSONAL issues with the subject and chooses to use the authority to squash it based on that reason alone. As far as I am concerned, just about ANY issue should be permissible until such a time as the thread shows signs of civil disintegration. Big issues that are commonly politicized have a greater likelihood of going bad, BUT how many well thought out fine points can be shared BEFORE the breakdown? A thread lasting 2 pages may not make it to the third, but what is the value of the first two? If the mods shut down a thread before it starts, everyone is deprived of potentially valuable points of view. If a mod doesnt want to keep an eye on a thread to "moderate" for whatever the reason, then perhaps its time to move aside and allow some else to take their place.

Marabunta- Playing devils advocate to your post.... take my reply with a grain of salt if you may why must it be unbiased? I don't see that rule anywhere... Bias is in fact completely necessary. how can anyone tell if a mod has a personal problem with a subject? -ya can't. You can assume but we all know the saying about that. The hard truth is, your concerns are not what the rules are based on. Every forum has moderators and they are the ones who determine/ enforce permissability. This is not a forum for discussing politics or religion- valuable or not.

I should add here, that I made some edits/adds to my post right as Mara was replying. I read your post- everything is biased- no way around it. and again, lemme say- we're debating, I hope. I'm not trying to make anything personal Just trying to talk about the topic with someone who sees it differently

not to play devil's advocate but I think the last few posts have still missed one important thing: we are guests here, Paul Southren is the host. his house, his rules.
I don't mean to be a jerk by making this so abrupt but arguing reasons to allow politics and/or religion is disrespectful to our host. these days it seems everyone feels they are entitled, or that the world owes them some thing, or some right. I don't see it that way, maybe I am a little old fashioned but as much as I make a home here and enjoy my time here, this isn't my house and I will be respectful of my host.
really that is the core of it. we aren't a democracy here, we are guests. I believe if we hold that attitude then there will be little reason for us to fight over pretty much anything.
I think that I didn't need to say that, I think that nearly every member here is respectful most of the time and that we have very few problems as a community and that is one reason I like it here so much. I know we are just talking about this but I thought this was an important angle that was being neglected.

As divisive as the issues are, they are best left alone in an impersonal setting such as an internet forum. Hence Pauls wishes. I am sure that we (The forumites) could sit down face to face, and have a civil debate about such issues. On the web, you lose the nuances, the inflection of voice, and the silly grin that tells you someone is teasing. Too impersonal, too vague, to easy to get riled,it always winds up being too divisive. Let us leave our differences of opinion for such time as we can all congregate somewhere and engage each other like adults in a civil discourse on world affairs. In the meantime let us all return our focus to our unifying passion for all things sharp and pointy. The less we worry about what kind of BS is going to pop up in the cafe, and who said what, the more we can focus on browbeating Gus into producing more falchions. Peace my brothers

I understand your point of view and agree with it almost entirely. Rules are rules and I am not trying to break any, contrary to what some may believe. My point was missed so let me reiterate. The religion thing is pretty easy, and understandable. However, when someone says politics, thats a whole nother issue. Politics is such a blanket word that can be applied to just about anything. So, my point was to say that labeling something as "potentially" politics based on how a mod personally feels about the issue is wrong. Lets say that someone loves guns and hates knives. Lets say hypothetically that someone were to create a thread titled guns vs. knives and the mod shuts it down because of his personal feelings then I think that there is something wrong there. On the other hand, if someone started a thread asking if congress should ban all weapons in the US then THAT is a little more clear and the rule clearly applies.
All I am saying is there is a difference and mods need to be sure they are squashing a thread for the right reason.

one thing being missed here is that the few threads that were locked had clear religious tones, and one of them was locked for clearly side tracking a thread with a heated profanity debate. the mods seem to be very fair in their decision regarding that and had evn tried to get the situation under guidelines but it didnt work out.

I agree politics is a murky issue. I also agree mods should leave out their personal bias, which as has been pointed out is impossible. It's also been pointed out that their bias maybe shouldn't be left out and that's a good point too, in that their personal beliefs in what may or may not be right might be an asset in deciding when a thread has gone wrong.
Then again sometimes mods shut down threads that have nothing to do with politics or religion, their just getting out of hand.
Personally, I have my own opinons about what should or should not go on and what to do about it ect...... and in my personal life space I make these decisions. But not here, here I am not the decider.
I hope that last sentence wasn't too political.

^ This.
Its all well and good to have theories and opinions on how mods should judge what actions to take... but in the end its a pointless conversation. It breaks down so very simply... This is Paul's forum. Paul makes the rules. Paul picks the Mods who enforce the rules. If Paul doesn't like the way a Mod judges a situation or agree with the actions a Mod takes, Paul will deal with that Mod and that situation. That's really all there is to it.

the funny thing is if there was a ban or beginning legislation for one, nobody in this community would hear of it from here because of those rules, until it was to late. rules are for fools who cant think for themselves and need someone to protect them, but in the end it's your personal responsibility. People are so soft these days and it's just gonna get worst because they are raised really protected and have never had to go without.

I think sir, you may be confused. that brown stuff you speak of never falls on people who are respectful and courteous. at least not in such a way as to stick to them. it is an old fashioned idea, but I like it.
I have no reason to try and curry favor with Paul, if this was the Myarmoury forum I would have said the same thing but used the name Nathan Robinson, or Sonny Suttles at the Custom Sword Shoppe forum.
I want you to understand that what I said wasn't about gaining favor but rather about being respectful and doing right. if you owned the forum I would have used your name. to lay out an accusation of brown nosing just shows exactly what I am talking about. this whole thread should have pittered out long ago due to the fact that there is nothing to argue about. sadly, I think that the way people behave on forums is becoming more and more indicative of how they would behave in the house of a host. I do not approve of nor will I tolerate openly rude behavior. I may have no ability to change a person nor the authority to make them leave but I will certainly call them out.
the Chief is watching; always.
