I noticed this replica of the Atlantean sword from the CONAN THE BARBARIAN movie for sale on the Kult of Athena site. kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=EM2012004&name=Barbarian+War+SwordAnybody get their hands on one of these yet? Now, I know it's a wall-hanger, but I'm wondering if it's sturdy enoough to do some light katas with or is the tang going to snap in my hand the first time I swing it? As for not swinging it, well, 'cmon - NOT an option. I've wanted a replica of this sword since I was 12 years-old. You really think I could hold one my hands and not try some Schwarzeneggerish moves with it?

First off, lemme try to fix your link... for an explanation of why that was happening check this: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1611damn! still trying! this might not be possible...hmm? how to link it? I give up too- Mods should look into this one- how else are we going to be able to show off stuff from the very places the forum advertizes? For now let me mention that I think Slayer sold one of these conan swords on the old classifieds- pm him to see if I'm right and if so, what he knows about the sword.

Although it says threaded I have a feeling that it is a very thin rat-tail tang. Personally, I would not swing it around since the sword is so massive that it just might snap off of the tang. That's assuming the rat-tail is not welded onto the rest of the blade. I gave up on trying to hyperlink it lol

Hi there, I used one of these to play with fittings etc for my Project Conan. In short - dont swing it! It's not bad as far as Conan replicas goes, but not for swinging!!! In the pic you can see the tail weld, and below it, what an Albion functional one should be like. BIG difference. Cheers, Rob

I agree with Rob... the Conan sword is a big, heavy hunk of sharp or simi sharp (depending on what you buy) metal and the weak rat tail tangs that exist in almost all of these will NOT take the stress of that thing being swung around Arnie style... it will break and you will have a hunk of metal flying off in some direction... and that's bad news.

Thanks for all of your prompt responses. In that case, I guess I'm going to have to pass on it. If I can't even do a slow kata without fear of that skinny little tang snapping, best not to have it hanging on the wall tempting me. When are we going to get some halfways decent, affordable replicas of this already!?

Have you seen my Project Conan thread? viewtopic.php?f=3&t=522I have one blade remaining unsold, it's the ugly duckling of the lot (blade 8) but John has thought up a few etching patterns that might use the over fuller (like a dragon spewing flame!) and it will still be a mighty blade and very capable of destorying targets provided you have the upper body strength of Arnie! Regards, Rob

what i cant understand is this...the fittings are easy enough to produce, as is the blade...its nothing special. so WHY isnt anyone making a budget functonal one? even at a price tag of 300$ it would be reasonable and should be very doable.

Because it's a heavy beast, is why. Even the Albion version is around 7-8 lbs...

Its just like the LOTR swords the only ones who can afford the licensing are the big companies that turn out thousands of wall hangers or $3,000+ single pieces.

Not necessarily true, Darksword Armory is making LotR replicas. Now, mind you, I don't know for sure that they're licensed; it may be more of a expired-copyright thing where after a certain timespan anybody can make that product, but I am fairly certain they're licensed as they're making them very much close, if not identical, to the movie products. Are they cheap? No, but they aren't $3000 either.
You can also get a Conan sword from a custom maker, where "affordable" means "you get what you pay for". Tell Brendan Olsz... sorry Brendan, I can't spell your last name worth a hoot... anyway, tell him you want a Conan sword, and he'll be like "okay, how CLOSE to the original do you want it to be?" Because, let's be honest, that sword actually does have an incredible amount of work to put into it. Not only do you have a large blade (bastard size and WIDE), you have bronze castings-- expensive-- and etching--cost varies depending on how deep/fancy you want it to be. Never mind a scabbard...
Now, something like a LotR... say, Hadhafang (Arwen's sword from the first movie)... is rather easier to knock out. You could have a custom Hadhafang done for less than a Conan, and it'd look pretty much like the one in the movie. Why? It's a simpler design and less complex, aside from the blade etching and the gilding on the hilt. Glamdring? Same deal, fairly standard hilt, slightly fancy blade, largish pommel. Narsil? Now that takes a little more work, but not too bad, because it's a fairly ornate sword. A standard Ringwraith sword, on the other hand...
Point is, some swords are just easier to make than others. Some swords are fancier than others. Some swords are going to cost more than others because of points essential to their design. The Conan the Barbarian sword is one of those. There are some things about some swords that you just can't leave out, and on a Conan sword, the amount of work put into them (well, not all of them, the Conan dagger from the first movie is pretty simple) means they are going to be a costly proposition. No way around that. Either you shell out, or you get a rat-tail and pot-metal fittings shined up with Rub'n'Buff. That's what it comes down to.
