I want a high quality survival knife. There is no shortage of excellent options available on the market. However, I am also working, albeit slowly, on putting together a functional Middle Earth ranger kit...which would inevitably include a survival knife. As I see it I have two options. 1) Scour the internet for survival knives that wouldn't look out of place in Middle Earth or a medieval setting. Best I've found so far is the Rock Creek Oryx, it still looks fairly modern, but at least the grip isn't synthetic. www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=CIKH2510Are there any good survival knives on the market that would fit my criteria? 2) Go custom. While searching for knives I was inspired to check out Mad Dwarf Workshop to see what they had in stock. I fell in love with Grimbold www.maddwarfworkshop.com/knives/grimbold.html. After justifying the price (much higher likelihood of use for its intended purpose than a similarly priced sword), I was disappointed to learn that Grimbold was longer and thinner than I would like. But now the seed has been planted and I am considering a full custom from Mad Dwarf. I am thinking a monosteel blade 6" long and 3/16" or 1/4" thick with a full tang; roughly 10.5" overall. (design suggestions welcome ) Am I crazy to consider spending well over $300 on a knife that will see rough field use?

Well, I can't think of any bushcraft knives that don't look pretty modern. You could maybe take a RAT knife and strip the black finish off, and make wooden scales for it, but that would be a decent amount of work I think. The finish on the rat knives is pretty durable.
2: No, you're not crazy. If It's a knife made for hard use and it can stand up to it then it'll be worth it. Now, granted, I would probably never do it, but that's mostly a money issue more than anything. If you've got the money, and the want, go for it. Around 300 actually sounds reasonable, lol. I've seen some custom knives go for more than a freaking Albion!
I'd love to have a custom knife of my own design some day, I think that would be freakin sweet.
[EDIT: After looking around their site a bit, everything those guys make has a sort of LoTR feel too it. I have a feeling you'd be extremely happy if you commissioned a piece from them.]

Andy at Mad Dwarf said it would probably be done in a month or two. Will definitely be posting a bunch of pics and maybe a review when I get it.

Money comes and goes, its primary use is to obtain the things we need and want. So I do not think spending it on a knife is crazy, especially if it is used.
