The overall curve is a bit much, but it's very suitable for that piece and makes it look good. It looks a lot better than the original (though I do like the original's cup-style guard).

It does have a lot of sori for its lenght. The reason for this is that I didn't own any long curved blade when I drew it the first time around, so I had to base the curve on shorter blades which tends to mean more sori. Still, its within what I consider tolerable limits.

I'd almost, with that style hilt, lessen the sori, and increase the overall length.

You'd want it longer? If anything, I think it might be a tad too big already.

Didn't see the blade length xD my bad...!
I'd still lessen the curve, or make it a less abrupt/dramatic angle from end to end... if that makes sense... Just my personal taste, not sure how it would handle that way. but i've only ever really used a gladius for swords, so i may be completely off.

You know, it's supposed to be a pretty uniform tori-curve, though I admit it kinda looks like it straightens out at the ends. Either it's the taper that playes tricks on the eye, or the curve got a bit warped in scanning. This one is from before I started cutting my scetches up to make the scanning process easier.

It may be optical illusion, but i'd lay my money on warping. the thing looks almost sickle like. Still a sick blade though.

Been a while since I posted anything. With the John Carter movie coming along, I've started working on my enterpretation of the Martian Longsword, and I still have that Conan design to finish.(I did the blade long ago, but it still needs a hilt.)

Yeah, I know. But the good knews is that the sketch for the Martian longsword is finished and I even went ahead and designed a shortsword to go with it. I also dug up the unfinished Conan sword and some other stuff. Been having some computer problems over here (and even more problems with a nasty ear infection) but I'm going to gather them all up and try to scan them tomorrow. Curiously, I found a sketch for this long, katanaesque warder type blade I don't actually remember drawing.

I'm mostly wondering how I could have forgotten about it. This thing is huge - the blade is like 37 inches. And I have no idea what kind of hilt I was going to put on it.

wow.. 37 inches is bloody huge... that'd be a shienarian style blade i'd say... they favor big, stupendously long blades slung on the back for foot fighting.
you finish that one, ya let me know... i'll be salivating until then.. and don't feel bad.. i found a sword in the closet i'd forgotten i had owned.... ain't seen it in 3-4 years.

Okay, finally, here are some John Carter inspired swords: I sorta stole Mok's idea of the longswords being two-handed since it seemed to make sense when I designed the hilt, though mine is somewhat more suited for one-handed use. I also tried to keep some aestetic influence from the Frazetta design as a homage, as well as give the blades kind of a Jody Samson-esque character. Before I listened through A Princess of Mars on audiobook, I had planned to give it a curved saber-like blade. However, while Burroughs didn't go into much detail about the swords at all, he did at one point describe the longswords as "needle-like." After that I kept imagining them as more akin to rapiers or Type XVs. Since there's a lot of riding going on I figured it might have started out as a cavalry sword, so the blade ended up like kind of an overgrown mutant version of a late cavalry saber, with a considerable back for added cutting power. (Tars Tarkas uses his longsword in a cut-and-thrust manner at one point, and even though I'm willing to give Burroughs some artistic license on that, I wanted it to be something that could deliver a good blow when needed.) There's very little to go on when it comes to lenght - the longsword seems to be a "long sword" in the same sense as the katana, in that it's longer then the short sword, which in turn is longer then a knife. They are also used by both the huge green martians and the human-sized red martians alike, and they can be used indoors. (In one scene, Carter duels five red martians in a dungeon.) I thought 24" seemed reasonable. This one wasn't actually planned, I basically drew it on a sudden whim. Consider it a bonus. A Princess of Mars offers no discription of the shortsword, so I pretty much made this up by my own judgement. Going by the swashbuckler style of the book, I figured that if the longsword was the rapier of Barsoom, the shortsword would be the cutlass. I made them rather different on purpose because reasoned that if you would carry two swords at the same time (plus a knife) you would want either swords to excell at different things. The shortsword would hence be a back-up blade used in close quarters, while boarding ships, or for stuff like cutting ropes, etc. Interestingly, while the longsword seems to be Carter's prefered sword, he does opt to use the shortsword while considering to kill Tal Hajus, implying there are situations you'd rather go for the shorter blade. Should I find out that any of the sequels give an actual description of the shortswords, I may draw an alternative version. But all in all, I'm pretty satisfied with these designs.

That longsword's really interesting, but I'm definitely digging the shortsword, Anders; it makes me think of a Westernized liuyedao.

You know, still curious about that 37" monstrosity of a blade you mentioned

It's mostly that I absolutely don't remember even drawing that sword to begin with, so I still have no idea what kind of hilt I should put on it. Might try to put something together, though I'm a bit distracted these days.

Hahaha, I have to poke at ya a bit. I could give suggestions as to what else to put on it. lol. I have similar happen. Dug out patterns for a boot type and found I have apparently a whole set of templates for a breastplate I don't remember drawing, but they've got my signature on them... o.0
