I recently purchased a Hanwei Filipino style-Kris. As I was unwrapping the sword from its greasy platic wrap, I cut the mess out of my thumb on the gaurd. The blade-facing side of the triangular sword gaurd has several teeth or notches. On mine, these were ground very thin, almost as if they were sharpened on purpose. Is the sword made this way on purpose ? Did the smoth get carried away with mine ?

It's actually almost hard to say that a Kris even has a sword guard. But if you're talking about the sharp notches on the widened part of the blade next to the hilt, they're supposed to be there on a Kris. When your opponent moves inside the swinging range of the main blade, they're designed to shove into his face to drive him back. The notches on the upper side are blade catchers and the big hook on top is for when your enemy grapples with you, you can point the tip of the sword down and bring the hook up into his crotch. At least it was only your thumb. This is one nasty piece of equipment. Nice purchase. Very exotic.

Yeah, I used gaurd for lack of a better term. The sword is deceptively sharp as well. At first I thought I would have to sharpen it myself, but it has a very nice factory convex edge. Waiting for my wives pumpkins to soften up now

I have a similar Kris, and, it also has those nasty sharp edges. I finished sharpening them since their presence seemed pretty doggone clever to me. It's a sword that says "Hand's off!" If you can remember that this sword bites with more than just the primary edges, you might consider doing the same on yours. Never can tell when, or if, it might come in handy. And, it's nice to have there just to show friends the deadly cleverness of Philippine Warriors. I really LOVE the weapons those folks make. OH! Also, may I ask where you bought this?

It is actually made that way. The Filipino kris sword from my understanding has 3 variations. There is the straight blade kris which is the ones used most for combat because it is more effective than the wavy and the semi wavy types. Been a victim many times being cut while cleaning because of the shape. You have to be extra careful compared to other swords.
