Hi Everyone!
I'm looking to buy my first short sword/ really big knife and just can't decide between Cold Steels Magnum Tanto XII and CRKTs Hisshou.
What are the pros and cons of each of these? How would you decide?
Thanks a lot!

First off, welcome to SBG!
I'd personally go with the Hisshou because it's cheaper, looks nicer, is a full inch longer, and has a traditional styled wrap. On the plus side of the Magnum is that it has a guard, however small and the pointed butt cap could be used as an impact weapon. With the Hisshou, you get YK-30 high carbon steel (no clue, but by all accounts it's pretty damn good), whereas with the Magnum, you get San Mai III. Truthfully, it's up to you which you go with. The Magnum is about $107-$135 more than the Hisshou (which costs 179.95$ on Kult of Athena) as opposed to the Magnum's $314.95 on Knife Center; it may be cheaper elsewhere, but that's the cheapest I've found that I trust. Since I have no idea on the differences in the steel, it really comes down to price and aesthetics. I like the look of the Hisshou, as well as its cheaper price tag, much more than the Magnum, but there are most likely others who feel differently.

Hello EJP Welcome to SBG, you bring a good but tough question. Both of these knives look like very good, high-end tanto-style blades... Choosing between them will be like choosing between a BMW or a 'Benz... The Magnum's handguard seems like a big plus, if you intend to thrust with this blade. However, the Hisshou seems like a great cutter and is much cheaper. By the way, check out this website ; yourcornerstore.com/index.php?ma ... cts_id=576 yourcornerstore.com/index.php?ma ... s_id=28476 288 $ For the Magnum and about 176 $ for the Hisshou, now your wallet owes me a few bucks

I have decided to buy the CS and will probably buy the CRKT later. Don't expect anything soon though as this was a massive spending for me (I'm a student) but I will pay my dues to the forum in a review asap.
For some savings on shipping the tanto was delivered to a friend in the US and will be brought here by her, when she visits Austria the next time So I will have to wait for some time... but I guess it is well worth it: here in Austria I would have to pay close to 400€ (~560USD)...
So: As soon as I get the knife, I will do my best to give you a thorough review.

I think that you will be pleased with CS as a knife choice. I have owned the san mai magnum tanto in the past, and It is a beast. Built like a tank and cuts like a laser. I have never owned a hisshyo ( which is one hell of a good looking knife ) but I have owned other crkt knives, including their hissatsu. it was a very nice knife, but the CS is superior in most ways, IMO.
