I'll bring a bucket so when everyone at the meet-up starts in, it stays semi-drool free XD
Gorgeous work, really wish I had been about when this was started.

That would be very cool, also would be neat to see it side by side with Jeffrey's creation. Maybe take a couple of glamor shots together

I agree with Sean, Dave - that is damn brotherly of you! Jees, now I'd better get it done by July! (I was gonna anyway... really) And I'll make sure its very well oiled to withstand any moisture problems... hahahahahaha
Thanks, jhart! Who know, maybe Albion will unload another batch of blades eventually...
I don't know, John, we put those two swords together they might just want to have at each other, you know? They're both of a very bellicose breed, eh? hahahahahaha

Hello fellow sword fans. I am actually new to these forums and this is my first post.
Mr Greybeard, i am so dispointed in myself for not discovering your amazing project sooner! I am impressed with your work in recreating the Atlantean. I would love to know how you did those engravings? and also how you managed to flatten the bumps on the heads of the dragons into scales? Top Notch work indeed!

I take it you haven't read the whole thread (yet?) - understandable as it's some 30+ pages.
quote from page 26 answering how the engraving is being done:
-in some posts they are called etchings and alternate etchings have been offered but John has said it a couple of times that he's engraving wigth high speed bits.
John works in a bronze foundry and does lost wax casting/sculpting. He has taken molds of some pieces from already made Atlanteans (Albion model I think), makes wax castings and does his magic to improve, refine, and give better detail to each wax casting. each sword has it's own custom castings as each sword is a little different. From these wax castings he makes a mold to pour the bronze into- google/youtube wax casting for more on how that looks and works.
John also does weekend work teaching blue whale song calls to aspiring Aquamen in training, as well as the occasional cross-Atlantic pillaging voyages for furs, pelts, and women.

Holy Shamolys... I guess this is my lesson about not keeping a very close eye on this thread (turn your attention away for one day...) First off - Whoa, Conan!!! By Crom, for sure!!! Thank You for the good words! And welcome to this marathon thread and project that both bear your illustreous name! When I began reading your post I was expecting the next words to be - " all those Warrior swords in the Atlantean King's toumb..." hahahahahahahaha And please, "Mr Greybeard" is my Father (yeah, for all you wiseguys - I'm ancient, so he's anti-deluvian...) I do appreciate the respect, but John is much more comfortable for me. Or Greybeard - just Greybeard. Chrisperoni's got the engraving exactly correct. Super high speed pencil grinder. It takes for freaking ever to do and maybe looks a little rougher than chemical "etching", but its a skill I've already got and to come up with a comparable quality etching set-up would be a whole nuther project. That, and I think the "rougher" look kind of works for this project. Now the castings came from a SLO knock-off of the original Atlantean (pot metal furniture castings, stainless blade...), probably from China. The SLO's guard and pommel castings weren't really all that bad, but once I got "into" the project I studied photos of the real original furniture (check out page 12 for a great article about the original sword - thanks, Brendan) and realized I had to do some work on them. So I cast wax models from the molds of the SLO furniture and then re-sculpted the dragons scales (Big props to you for noticing that detail!) and some other details to tighten them up and get closer to the originals. Then made new molds of the re-worked guard and pommel for the metal casting. I've had conversations with some other very respected makers about how I maybe should have just sculpted the guard and pommel myself, from scratch, and been able to call these full customs and charged maybe two or three times what these swords are going for. Maybe I should have... but thats not how this project got started, so there it is. Now, on to the really serious matters brought to the table by my esteemed forum colleagues (bastids.!) So heres my "blue whale singing" class in action: But, jees, Chris... nix on the "pillaging...for women" stuff - if the better half happens to take a look at this, well, my Pottery Barn Class cover will be blown for sure... And as for the Girl Guides troop... as good as an idea as I thought it would be (lotsssss of "camping" trips, eh?), I haven't seemed to be able to get any vict... er, I mean volunteers signed up yet !!!VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED RE: NEXT PHOTO!!!BECAUSE I OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO DISCRETION WHATSOEVER... Think the recruiting poster might have anything to do with that?
