Dave, please forgive my incredible tardiness in replying to your kind words. Very succinctly, I believe you will be wielding your Warrior very soon after the new year. I'll be PMing you soon to nail down your preferences as to finishing details. Thanks!

Can't wait to see a finished blade, very exciting! Wish I had been around when this started so I could have nabbed one!

Re: Project CONAN ! The Atlantian Warriors Swords Sent: Wed Jan 11, 2012 12:25 pm by ecovolo Hey John, Checking in to see how your health is doing, and how the Conan project is coming along. What's the latest, dude? --Edward Re: Project CONAN ! The Atlantian Warriors Swords Sent: Wed Jan 11, 2012 10:36 pm From: John Greybeard To: ecovolo Hey Edward How've you been? I am as I have been - not 100%, but hanging in there... still putting in as many hours at the bench as I can (not enough) Right now I'm waiting for delivery of a couple dozen micro carbide cutting bits, so I can finish engraving Dave's blade. Turns out that it takes 4 bits, per side, to cut in the hyroglyphs. The hardened steel dulls the little buggers that fast... Then its tighten up the fittings. The SLO fittings that I used for a base to work from had voids where they joined the tang, leaving a couple of serious stress points unsupported.. Not a big deal for an SLO, but on a functional sword - not acceptable. So I'm fixing them. More work, more time, but its gotta be right. Some photos showing what I'm talking about: original fitting my casting with plug to be welded in and "Banzai peened" to the tang closer up And so it goes... Thanks for checking in on me! John

Hey John. How are you engraving them?: by hand with a dremel/die grinder, or in a machine (CNC milling etc?) If by hand I quite like using ball tip diamond points. They last quite well. I imagine the carbide would chatter a bit?

Hey Brendan
Using a super fast (100,000 rpms, I think) little pnuematic die-grinder. The carbide bits cut steel like butter - until they dull, that is... then they do start to chatter and jump. I tried a vanadium tip but it blew right out. May have been defective... Where do you get the diamond bits? Any idea how many rpms they're rated for? Thanks for the tip! (get it? hahahaha)

Stocking up? Hell's yes! 'Cause that means you're one blade closer to finishing *mine* . . . . Well, that, and it's impressive to read about the time, energy, and detail that you're putting into these blades, man. The finished results hold the promise of being just *that* awesome. --Edward

Glad to hear your health is improving John. Good photo of the tang just shows how meaty it is, or by comparison how crap the other one is.

Hey John If you have a look at the little Wolf and Lion Ramant engraving on the blade of this sword ( www.fableblades.com/WolfRampant.html ) I drew those with a little 1mm ball. It allows me to draw in the steel like a pencil. I quite like it. If you search ebay for 'Diamond Point Ball' (below)or things like 'rotary' or 'dremel' and 'Diamond point' there are stacks to choose from. www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from ... Categories I usually buy them from this great_tool fellow - seems to be a dominant force in them. I've gotten stacks of stuff from him over the years. Just coz he's always there with whatever I'm looking for and cheap. I've bought a couple of different 50 pc variety bozes. And also lots of 30 packs of little points, diamond ultra thin disks. All sorts of stuff. I recently bought these ball points to stock up for future engravings: www.ebay.com.au/itm/30-Diamond-c ... 3cc0b07412 I don't know the speed rating on them. I think the dremels are 30,000 rpm at full speed (I always run at full speed). These can lose their form when they get hot. Thats the only thing to watch. Try not to hold them on.

I checked with Great Tool and he said the diamond tips were rated for 35,000 rpm. Damn.

Thanks, David. And all of you guys - I cannot adequately express how much I appreciate the patience and regard for my health that you've all shown throughout this marathon run of a project!
I'm too ancient myself for this sword to have been the one that started it all for me, but I can't think of another blade that carries so much of the symbolism, the power, or the majesty... And as long as this has taken, every time I pick up one of these bruisers, I get the same old thrill. And also, as much as I love working on them, by Crom, I want as much as you all do to see them finished and wielded!
More soon...
