Wraith, under Florida law, 'weapon' means any dirk, metallic knuckles, slungshot, billie, tear gas gun, chemical weapon or device, or other deadly weapon except a firearm or common pocketknife. A fixed blade knife falls into the category of 'other deadly weapon' without being a pocketknife (which, by definition, is a folder).
And I never said that she should carry it without knowing how to use it; I suggested training on several occasions. A self defense course is a decent option, but finding one that is quality and doesn't recycle the same old BS is more difficult than finding a quality Arnis/Kali/FMA class, which will include empty hand self-defense as well as knife techniques.
As for Tasers, there's the projectile ones or the ones you hold in your hand; in the former, you have to get accurate with it, just like a gun. In the ladder, it can be knocked away and has to be held against the skin for several seconds. And to avoid an argument of personal opinion, I'll ignore the fact that allowing a crook to rob you creates more victims because hey, they figure, they got away with it once, what's to stop 'em from getting away with it a second time? They may also just kill you once they have the money so you can't identify them.

My two cents ; I think BloodWraith has a very good point ; spending 50 $ on a good self-defense course would be money well-spent. It might be less cool than buying and owning a nice, sharp, testosterone-dripping knife, but IMHO it will be a better preparation for a real-life confrontation. Also, I don't know how many of you have been in a real-life fight with guns and tasers, or had to deal with robbers. I know I haven't, but I heard many stories. AFAIK, there's no single, universal type of bad guy. Some baddies will run away at the slightest sign of resistance (according to what one of MA teachers said of a real-life situation), others will mock you after taking a full can of pepper spray in the face (another real life situation someone told me, in that case a former security guard). Some will run after seeing a taser, some might be still standing after getting tasered three times. From a criminology course I had ; some criminals won't stand up to the slightest resistance, others will only get more angry and dangerous if they meet resistance. It all depends on the bad guy, and what he has (or hasn't) taken before bothering ya'... It is highly unlikely you will know what kind of bad guy you are facing, until the fight is over, if there is one. So, in all, I'd suggest a good self-defense course (It's not the sword (knife ) but the arm that wields it). It's better for her to rely on herself and her skills than some expectation of what a bad guy will or won't do.

I wasn't disagreeing on the self-defense course, just that the one you need to find is quality and firmly rooted in reality and not what you find in many current martial arts schools; a good self-defense course should not only teach the how, but the why and when, as well as the skill of attempting to talk them down, while also the ability to recognize when deescalation efforts don't seem to be working.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread, but I think we need to be careful of the advice we're giving to our wives, sisters, girlfriends, etc. I work in a max prison and I know something about the kind of person who commits violent acts against women. These aren't just people who woke up one morning and said, "I'm going to start raping women." They're damaged goods. Their actions are part of a pattern of dysfunction that has been growing for years. When our staff has to perform a take-down on one of these guys, it usually involves eight to ten guards the size of pro football players and multiple institutional-sized cans of OC spray. The inmates I work with would laugh at a woman with a knife, taser, pepper spray, etc. They tell me that there are only two things that slow them down . . . a woman with a handgun, and surprisingly enough, a woman with an ear-piercing sonic device. Set off next to the ear-drum, these things are devastating. Not only that, but they: a.) send out a loud warning that alerts help, b.) shock the perp long enough for the victim to escape, c.) bring an end to the lust-response that's often further triggered by struggling. Everyone has their own ideas on this, and these are just some thoughts, but the general consensus is that screaming, sonic devices, verbal confrontation, etc. seems to be the best deterrent. That said, if the perp tries to get the victim to go with them, then fight, kick, scratch, spit, stab, OC spray. Once in the car, the victim is unlikely to survive.

I believe so, but I'm not sure where. Personally, I'm not really sold on the idea because they also affect the person using it and loud noises can be debilitating. So, yes, while it's effective, you also get the same dose of sonic noise your attacker gets.

Aye, that be why it's on my list. It may not be ideal for a primary knife, but as a boot knife, I can dig it.

Thanks alot for your post Dodger, it's great to hear from someone who knows about those I usually call ''bad guys''. I agree about the '''Scream deterrent'', most of the self-defense coursees I had included a lot of training about how to shout and make noise to deter someone who is about to attack. It's a lot less fun then buying a knife for self-defense, but a lot closer to reality and safer IMHO.

If you just handed an attacker $139...they'd prolly go away and leave you alone...

On the topic of high pitched deterrents, it works very well because they are directional so they don't affect the user, because that would just be plain stupid to have the user affected by the device, which stands to reason. Actually the whole "women running away from the guy" is from a psychological point of view possibly even more dangerous than standing her ground.

eeeum...yeah. Humor, based on a statement made by the OP...namely that he is looking for a blade preferably priced at $50 or less.

I like the Cold Steel SRK with San Mai III for my next purchase or the Bushlore from Condor Knife and Tool from the knife center . com. The Bushlore is more what you are looking for and the Sapien..but really a knife in the purse is useless in an assault because of the inaccessibility...attacks are fast and surprising...If she will actually use it she needs a clip on...with meat eating serration...I recommend the Swiss Army knives with the single blades and contour handles...plus for some reason these knives are not seen as threatening or weapons...they are thin slicers...awesome for up close single hand opening and dirty work. www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... s=CN2394HC Sapien www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... =CN23243HC Bushlore

You sir have said the truth...Rule number one is never leave Crime scene A to arrive at Crime scene B to tortured at the convenience of the monster who took you...However you resist it is important that it start with loud verbal response...I do not believe a knife is very effective because most people will be hesitant to use them because most people are normal. I have never considered the sonic device...that is good. However in some studies I read while women in particular may hesitate to use a knife they don't seem to suffer from this compulsion as much as men. Yes women will shoot you. I try to explain that by protecting yourself you are protecting you loved ones. I use some graphic prompts like "would you stick a sharpened pencil in someone's eye? Usually hesitant answers no mixed with strange looks...Then same freak question with "to save your child' tacked on. No hesitation at all "YES". Psychology is a bizarre...but it works.
