So hey all - I had kinda had no idea there were others who were crazy enough to mess around with Swords. It's kinda cool to know there are other people who do this. So...when I was younger (15-18) I got into messing with swords and like alot of you I fell into the 440C garbage crap..hey I had fun. Anyway, I'm an out of shape 32 year old now and I remember how not out of shape I was when I messed around with this stuff.
I actually have some real training - I started my martial arts career under my older brothers tutelage with JKD and then moved on my own studies that led me to other kung fu styles and eventually judo/jujitsu. I wish I was better and now that I'm actually picking a blade up everyday and practicing the cuts and postures I'm getting a little better. Thankfully, it's not like I'm going to have to defend myself against a real Samurai anytime soon.
So I've picked up a basic Musashi Katana and a couple Waki's and am keeping watch for all those pesky bottles that try to threaten the safety and good honest folks. I'm also thinking about starting up some Tameshigiri and planning my next purchase. I've got my eye on the "1060 Spring Steel Handmade Musashi Musha Katana Sword" on sword n armory for 160, the hanwei agincourt, maybe a crecy short sword, and maybe a kukri too. I forgot how much fun it was to swing one of these and how peaceful and relaxing it was.
so, you guys have unbeknownst to you, been very helpful. thanks

Greetings and welcome to SBG. Glad you found us. Just fyi this should have been posted in the welcome wagon section in off topic. viewforum.php?f=26 Easy to make this mistake so no harm done. Just figured I would let you know. Good to hear you refound the sword. They are very fun to use protecting yourself and others against those nasty water bottles.

Hey there, welcome aboard! If you haven't seen this ( viewforum.php?f=6) yet,I'd check it out. There are people still moving reviews over, so everything isn't there yet but there is a lot of good reviews on all kinds of swords.

Welcome, Shadowsong! You are among friends, now. When the bottles invade, we shall band together to defeat the menace! Until then, congrats on refinding the swordly obsession, and have fun cutting! (Be safe, and all that, but you know that already, I'm sure!) Just as a friendly warning- I think you'd be better off to avoid Hanwei's Iberia line, that has the Agincourt and Crecy in it... but that's just my $0.02. There are a few who will say that they're decent swords, but I and many others think of them primarily as sword-shaped axes lacking a decent edge. There's actually a thread about that right now... I'll be back in a minute with a link. Feel free to start a thread asking about different model swords and such! We're always happy to help. Glad to have you, man. -Slayer

alright - that's all interesting..... I'm thinking you know maybe get a decent midievil blade to play around with some and agincourt kinda looked like my idea of one what one of those would be and I've read alot of reviews saying it's pretty tough and decent enough. I do hear alot better stuff about the Valiant ATrim and Hanwei's tinker pearce offerings so I could save up a little more I guess. Maybe the "Tinker Pearce Sharpened Single Hand Sword - SH240" for about 20 bucks more is a better choice?
I'm not exactly worried about complete historical accuracy or complete adherence to tradition. I just want something that handles right, works, and is tough enough for me to screw up on some as I progress.
It's hard not to have your mind on safety when you're holding something this dangerous. A well placed nick in the wrong spot could be uttterly deadly with my musashi. It's sooo sharp and fast. If it touches something as soft as skin and slides just a little someone is bleeding. It's that simple. I keep them put away and double check that they are locked up when anyone comes over just like the firearms. what you think I wouldn't like shooting stuff as much as cutting it??

Don't be knockin those sword shaped axes...lol...everything has a purpose. You gotta prove you can stick a sword thru a tree at some point right? ....Right? lol

Welcome Shadowsong, pleased to meet you! I don't own any of the Iberia line and so could only really speak from second hand knowledge on those but I own a Hanwei Tinker longsword and I've been almost nothing but pleased with it. It came decently sharp (I understand I got lucky there, in all honesty you shouldn't expect that if you get a Hanwei/Tinker, odds are you'll have to touch up the edge a little) it handles like a dream and cuts bottles like there's no tomorrow. (What little bit of cutting I get to do, I'm far from an expert) If my longsword is any indication, you'd be well pleased with a sword from the Hanwei/Tinker line.

I'll also throw in a welcome, and a recommendation for any of the Hanwei/Tinker line. I have their fullered bastard, and it is one of my favorite swords to handle. As said by many others though, expect to sharpen it. I know Sonny at Valiant Arms has sold properly sharpened and customized H/Ts before, though I have no idea how much it would cost, or if the option is still available. I don't personally recommend learning to sharpen a sword with a H/T. They are hard enough that, even with the proper tools, you will be cussing life before you're finished. Or, I was anyhow. Other than the sharpness issues, the blades are wonderful, and the package as a whole is easily customizable so you can make the sword your own.
