Man, pass out in the bathroom just once and look what happens!
My name is Marc, but since there are so many here with the same name, same spelling, I go by my long-time nickname 'Poohze' - as in 'Marc E Poohze'. I'll also answer to the name 'Cap'n Stinky'. Born in the USA, but living here in Oz since the age of 6.
History of competition fencing, worked as a fencing instructor for a couple of years (foil, sabre, epee), SCA, Chinese and Japanese martial arts.
Currently have a bunch of cutlasses, the Hanwei Mortuary sword, a longsword made for me by a friend many years ago, and my latest purchase- the new Hanwei Military Dadao.
Been pretty quiet for a while, for a bunch of reasons, and probably will be for a while yet, but I read here every day, love the place and really, really appreciate all you terrific people who make SBG the great forum that it is.
Cheers
Marc E

Hey Marc,
I finally got myself back to Oz, in Canberra (like you right?). What do you think of the Military Dao? I would love to catch up and have a swing of it some time.
Cheers,
Rob

Yep, Love Canberra!
I'm really impressed by the Military Dadao! I haven't had a chance to cut with it yet, but the balance and weight are excellent. The blade is seriously thick at the guard and the distal taper is extreme (in a good way), so the balance sits right back- I reckon you could use it one handed, although it really shines as a two-hander. But it still has a lot of heft, came with a decent-enough edge (although I'll touch it up a bit), and I imagine it'll cut like a demon. The only small quibble is that the ring-pommel seems to be a separate stainless-steel piece rather than forged from the end of the tang, which is traditional and would be my preference. That's a very small quibble! For the price from KOA, even with shipping to Oz, I'm very, very happy with it!
When my health improves (maybe that should be if...) and I'm up to some cutting it'd be cool to have you 'round to give her a swing!
Cheers

Hey! ^^ Glad to see you here!
What do you think of the Hanwei Mortuary? I was thinking of picking one up myself but would like a few owners' opinions first.

Thanks Midori! And thanks for all your hard work for the forum! The Hanwei Mortuary is a sweet little sword, very light, well-balanced and fast. It's a delight to run through fencing drills! The guard and pommel are beautifully detailed. I got the 'antiqued' version which is some sort of powder-coating that is both hard-wearing and attractive, but the grip and scabbard are a poo-brown which I'm less fond of. If I got another, I'd probably get the standard version. Being a Hanwei euro, the edge isn't anything like as sharp as it should be, and I haven't yet gotten around to sharpening it up enough to cut with (it's a very long, slender blade, which makes sharpening more difficult). Check-out Paul's review, he quite liked its cutting ability once sharpened... www.sword-buyers-guide.com/english-swords.html The one big problem I had was that the basket is a bit small, and my hands are quite large. I couldn't actually get my hand into the basket! I had to do some major surgery, removing the two side bars between the basket and the pommel, and bend the sides of the basket out a bit. A bit drastic, but once I'd felt her in my hand, I wasn't letting her go! Cheers Marc E

Welcome, I hope your health improves soon. Thanks for the information about the mortuary hilt, I also have large hands so I think I'll stay away from that one but the military dadao is on my list of swords to check out and it just moved up closer to the top, maybe to the very top. Good to see you here, Thanks for sharing all the information.
