Ooooh. That is beautiful, Luna. You ever going to design a blade to go along with it? *Wink wink Nudge Nudge*

Holy crap, Zach, that's awesome. I know it's influenced by swiss sabers, but I could really see an XVIIIa or XVIIIb blade looking great on it.

I have to give you props, Luna... that's better than I've done in a long time. You've got some real skill going on there with wood carving. What did you use, by the way? Woods and tools, that is...
And if you're ever interested in putting a 'blade' on that thing, I'd suggest some maple from Home Depot. It comes in 1" thick pieces so you'd have to shave it down something fierce or rip it down the middle once you cut out a blank, but it's got a beautiful grain and should polish up nicely. It's not a real sword, I know, but at the same time, how often do you get to make something beautiful with your hands? This is a great piece of artwork, I think, aside from the whole sword aspect. Again, great job on that piece!

Wow, thanks, guys! And thank you for that reference photo, Dave--that beautiful piece of yours was one of the inspirations. I did have in mind a blade for it when I was planning the project (a hollow-ground saber blade like the one on Nathan Robinson's A&A version) but I agree with Aaron that an XVIIIa or XVIIIb would also fit very well. Hmmm. I didn't actually make one for this assignment because I was required to abstract the object away from the concept of a "sword," and the easiest way to do that was to make a sword that cannot function as a weapon. I don't have plans to add a blade anytime soon because my professor asked to keep the piece for the rest of the semester. He's going to display as an example in one of the art department glass cases, but I will keep blades in mind for a summer project. Tools--I used everything I had access to (I could hang around a wood shop for once!) so... belt sanders, disk sanders, three different kinds of bandsaws, a table saw to rip flat surfaces, an oscillating spindle sander, a dremel with sanding drum, and a coping saw for the rough shaping, and then the final details were done with various files, sanding blocks and wood-carving chisels. I used the chisels I received as a gift this christmas for the majority of the details. Carving Tools

Before I absorbed the script I thought I was looking at computer graphics. Obviously you don't have 14 thumbs like I do. ( Wait. Strike that. - counts furiously - Never mind; it is 14 thumbs... )

Hahahaha, thanks, Dave. That's the most unexpected comment yet!
Though I doubt you could really be all thumbs with those champion fencing days to remember. Precison here just involves an opponent of much closer proximity!

DO IT! Could be like a 15th/16th century version of the rudis. Would be interesting to see if it could be attached securely enough to be lightly swung, but I think it would be perfect for a display piece.
And I love the new finish. Did you just oil it? Looks much older now, I love it.

man, that ring pommel dao with the s shaped guard is just perfect. i mean i adore the recurved grips on dao (that is why my first, and until now only sword is a dao) but i never really liked the guard or pommel, and now you put my fav guard and fav pommel on it, giving me the perfect sword to stare at in the weekends.

Thanks, mate! That one was actually a commission for forumite LiamBoyle (haven't seen him around in a while) as a possible base for an Odinblade or Fableblade. Credit to him for the idea of the ring pommel and curved guard shape with the dao blade.

Thanks very much, Dave! I hope to get back into drawing now and again--I realized it's been almost a year since I made a new design.
