Hi all, Iv'e been toying with this crazy idea lately. I'm thinking of taking a Cheness 9260 DH or 9260 Shirasaya and converting it into a "Tachi" style sword. I thought about using the existing saya and tsuka, and cut, plane, or sand them down to the right dimensions, then attach the proper fittings etc... One of the problems I see is the availability of tachi fittings at anything near a reasonable price. The only guys I've found that have them for less than $1000.00 is Fred Lohman. (Still pricey at $650.00). I think I could make the tsuba I need but not the other fittings. My question to you guys is, has anyone tried or know of someone who has done something like this. And does anyone know of a source of fittings that won't charge three times the price of the blade! Iv'e checked out countless sites on the internet, to no avail. Any ideas?

Tachi fittings are hard to find, try Brian at Ronin Swords, he may have something in the works, other than that Lohmans is about the only other option. You could look for a cheap wall hanger with tachi fittings but they tend to be a bit "off" if you know what I mean.
