Hi,
I'm a somewhat proud owner of a wallhanger sword [lol.. it was a gift, alright?! ] now a few years ago its handle broke [too much toying with it, lol] and i never hung it on a wall ever since, because.. why would I hang a sword with a broken handle?...
So anyway, now, a few years after, I bump into this site [which is amazing] that is full of guides that makes me hungry for some DIY projects of my own, first thing I thought was "Hey, why don't I fix my wall hanger? I got all the parts needed... except the handle!"
So now after coming to the decision of fixing this sword [because although its just for decorations, she's pretty], I have some things I better get clear before I begin, so I won't ruin it completely.
So now to the questions:
I've read this guide that is provided in a long PDF file called "Bingo_Mihara_Eriku.pdf", now I must comment - they use too much confusing Japanese terms which is kind of annoying for a beginner like me..
So anyway, that guide left with with some questions opened:
1. When I make the handle, do I carve a bit of each part of the handle for the tang to fit in? or just one half of the handle while the other side remains flat?
2. in the guide he puts some mixture on one half of the handle, something that looks metal-ish, what is that mixture? and do I need it, anyway??
3. this one's kinda stupid, but since i'm a complete beginner, please bear with me a bit more, the "Mekugi" [Mekugi? whatever, that little nit that goes in the little hole that sticks in the tang..], how exactly to I make it so it won't just sit in the handle? I mean, how do I construct the handle so it will stay stuck in it but not too stuck? [So like, that I can release it later on if I decide to], also about it, in that PDF file later on it seems he completely cutted the leftover of that nit [whatever still sticked out of the handle], why would he do that? now he can't release it anymore without breaking the whole handle, can he?
ok so this is all about the handle building questions, now I had just a few more questions [way more simple ones, anyway].
I figured if im gonna make it wall-hanging-worthy, I better polish it and grind it a bit to get rid of the nicks in the blade [which is almost completely flat], however, i'm unsure if I should, this 'sword' is made of some sort of stainless steel [420 I think, how can I determine exactly what kind of metal is it made of?? it is almost mirror-like]
so the questions are, will it not ruin the blade if i grind it using the method instructed in "Sword-Care.PDF"? and should I even bother polishing and grinding it? also, will doing that procedure will make it a bit sharp? ATM its completely flat.....
Well thats all I have in mind right now, 2am in the morning is a tough hour for me to think at.....
I thank in advance whoever would help me by answering some or all of my questions.
Good night and have a nice weekend,
-Jo
