Ok I am about to endevour in a tsuka making process but I was wondering if there are any good detailed guides on doing so that have tools, tips, wood choice, ect. Or even if anyone here has any experience with this kind of thing. All replies appreciated.
Also if anyone knows a good place to pic up the materials for doing so a point in the right direction is also appreciated.

I saw this one a while ago. I explains the process of making a tsuka out of a hickory hammer handle. japantrip.tripod.com/nihonto/tsuka/tsuka01.htmlThis is certaily not the traditional method, but makes choosing the wood quite simple. Hickory should make for a very strong tsuka. Even if you dicide to use some other type of wood, the process is illustrated quite well with photos. For one of my next projects, I would like to purchase a blade fitting and make my own tsuka and saya. Some links to supplies: www.shadowofleaves.com/www.japanese-swords.com/index.htm

i too am in the process of making a tsuka. i bought a long hickory handle and had it cut down the middle by a friend. i guess it was pretty hard to do. but it was nice, i have one for katana, wak, and tanto. everything is chisled out and the glue is drying right now . i just got my leather, fuchi-kashira, and menuki today !!! so needless to say, i'm pretty excited. i'm just waiting on the black stingray skin. i have a really nice PDF file that goes over this process and will gladly email it to you if you PM me your email addy. i don't remember where i found it, sorry.

A bokken is usually good material for making a tsuka, just cut of the handle.

Not always, there is usually not enough material, and the thin wood would break alot easier than if it were done from a larger peice specifically cut to fit the blade.

I don't remember where I saw it but I think some places sells scraps or leftover pieces that may big enough for a tsuka. I will see if I can find it again.
