Not really. I am a fanatic for medieval blades and hilts and I find modern designs to be pretty bland and tacky. however, gus trim is making a tactical line soon that seems pretty interesting.

Hi people, Have you ever got bored of the traditional looking sword and wanted to make something really modern looking and performing. this post if for everyonones project pics! Actually, I have pondered what a modern sword would/could look like. Not out of boredom for traditional designs, but more out of curiosity. Since the sword long ago fell out of favor and was replaced by the gun, there hasn't been a pressing need to develop swords any further than the point they reached in, say, the 1800's. That doesn't mean that individuals can't continue to develop them to suit their own tastes, though. I haven't actually attempted to design anything like this, but if you or others have, please share your ideas or sketches.

I DO like the idea of a modern sword, and wish that someone made what I'd like.
I think that the apex of development, as far as cavalry weapons for use against unarmoured opponents, was the saber used in most of Europe in the early 1900s, and copied by Patton in the saber he designed for the US military in 1913.
My only qualm with it for the present day is that it's too long, you don't need the "miniature lance" aspect of it when you're on foot, and a long sword, hung from the belt, is an impediment to normal walking, etc (as I'm sure many of you have noticed). It would also be a problem fighting in close quarters, unless you like chopping walls and bystanders.
So I'd like something along the lines of a Patton saber, but with a blade 18-22 inches long, rather than the 3-foot blades used by the historical cavalry weapons. The possibility of a bit of pommel sounds intriguing, too.

my spin would be a wakasashi, with a 16 to 18inch blade and replace the ito with paracord, modify the saya so it can worn on the back. Mind you in the Pacific regions they have been using machette's and cane knives as tactical swords very efficently recently.

However, I roll alot (bujinkan) and wearing it across my back prevents me from rolling effectively. My only project right now is modifying my zweihander's baldric so I can wear it elsewhere, or move it off my back momentarily, because I still roll when in a fight and wearing it on my back is becoming a pain. You drop to roll and all of a sudden it's like, ah damn... stupid sword. L.

my current project is to customize the PP series a bit, i started out wanting to use minerals on the sayas in various mon patterns, however trying malachite (green, that natural equivalent of the green crap that builds up around copper pipes) on the tanto it didnt quite work, so now im going with oxidised powder you use to color cement and doing it that way (Thanks to Ronin for the info bout the Powder)
The Plan is the Takeda Shingen Mon on the Tanto, the Oda Nobunaga Mon on the Wak and a couple of mons of the Toguawa Shogunate on the Katana all in different colors...

Here's an interesting project underway at Angus Trim Swords, and it's related to this thread. His new Tactical Sword line. I especially like the tag line at the top of the page. I have decided I must have one of these, and the prices include a tactical kydex scabbard. www.angustrimdirect.com/tacswords.htmApparently Micheal "Tinker" Pearce thinks along the same lines as you Miles... www.tinkerswords.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=496
