Strictly speaking this isn't official SBG news, and I feel kind of funny posting it here - but in late March Kana, Lana and I are off to Japan to visit Kana's family and friends and show our little bub off.
We are going to the Kansai region where she is from - mostly around Nara - but will also be spending some time in Kyoto and Osaka for a little over two weeks!
It's been 4 years since Kana has been back to Japan, and the last time I was there was around 7 years ago, so we are really looking forward to it! (well, my bank balance doesn't like it much - it is going to take quite some time to pay it off!)
But anyway, I'll be sure to bring back a few fun souveniers and may make a few competitions to give some cool Samurai related stuff away (though, to beat those who will ask - sorry, no Nihonto - hehe. I wish!!).
But as we will be showing off Lana to her friends and family in Japan, I thought I had better update some more recent pics of her for the SBG friends and family here! ;D
So here's we go:
Lana holding her first sword! (A Foam DSA LARP)
Lana and the SBG Bear...! Oh, and Kimba our faithful Jack Russel/Staffy and Lana's best friend.
Oh i see, gonna keep all the Nihonto souvenirs to yourself, are ya?
If you get a chance, visit Nijo Castle in Kyoto. If I remember correctly, there is some Nihonto and Yoroi on display there (not to mention the cool Mockingbird floors). And if you like curry, you must eat at Coco-ichiban. You'll see them around.
Also, FYI, Nara is generally considered the birthplace of the first Japanese swords.
You lucky sods who have been or are going to Japan, I've always wanted to go there, to the outlying islands not the major centres. I'd like to travel around and maybe visit some of the old areas that were important to the samurai and things like that. Oh well, maybe one day.
Paul: The baby is beautiful and very intelligent judging by her eyes and her ability to focus. Good luck to you, keep us updated so we know when you aren't around so much... uh... I mean so that we know when you are safely there, yes that is what I meant
Damn not much time lately and i missed such a thread -.- Cute kid you got there^^ Guess you'll have a daughter that loves swords as much ( if not more:D ) as you. She'll sure turn out to be an interesting person, not that many women who like swords out there.
Lucky you with the trip, take a lot of photos or i'll get angry;) Regarding SBG bear, i think it's really nice, should add them to SBG related items you offer^^
Japan is really a very fascinating country. You'd be surprised, you can turn a corner and amist the highrises and ultra modern neon futurism of the cities, you'll stumble on pockets of old Japan that are timeless...
The contrasts are very interesting to. Cutting edge and very 'out there' fashion, and on the same street old people in Kimono. Or a train station with people moving through like a stream of water, and a Buddhist monk in blue robes, wide brimmed basket hat, staff and alms bowl standing perfectly still near the wall...
Japan truly isn't Westernized... Modernized yes. But its still very uniquely Japanese...
Only problem is, many of the places that display Nihonto in Nara don't allow photos. But I'm sure I'll come up with something (officially, I'm not really aloud to go on a sword hunt this time around as it's really a visit for the Japanese side of the family. But I'm sure I'll be able to sneak off here and there)...
