As the title suggests "A Viking we will go" - and have gone indeed...! You may or may not have noticed it, but I've just added the long awaited Viking Sword pages to SBG! ;D More will be added soon, but a special thank you to all of you who contributed reviews to the forums that have been brought across, namely: Shootermike Rammstein Sandman RicWilly Brenno & Jake And an extra special THANKS to Sept of the Clan Sinclair for drafting the text for this page - great work mate! I really like the expanded 'community' feeling that the main site is starting to really develop now - there would be nothing more boring than if it was all just one or two people. I think the new motto for SBG will be "Sword Reviews and Information FOR Sword Enthusiasts BY Sword Enthusiasts" - though if someone else has something that sums it up better, feel free to suggest it. (I can feel another competition coming on maybe...! ) Cheers all, - Paul

That's incorrect. The spatha was introduced to western Germanic tribes who were employed by the Romans aus auxiliary troops, the northern Germanic tribes had little if at all contact with the Roman Empire. The design was only later passed on to other Germanic tribes, first evolving to the Migration Period sword and later to the so-called "Viking" sword which was actually often Frankish-made and very common in large parts of Europe.

Ah, thanks for picking up on those errors - I must admit it was a bit of a marathon and by the end of it, I was lucky to get the pictures to match up to the reviews.. Have fixed the noted errata, if anyone else sees something please let me know. Thanks again to those who made this page possible...

Great look and great info.
Every time I read Rammstein's review on the Witham and everyone else's I get a tear in my eyes.
Rammstein, your words on how it looked still gets me lad.
Of course all the reviews on all the Viking Swords, Hanwei, Cold Steel, Windlass and Valiant Armoury are all great reviews.
Very well done!

And I meant them all. You truly outshined any gen2 expectations I had before I got the sword. Sure, it's got its faults, that's to be expected. But I truly love this sword. I guess my only real complaint at this time would be a more even distal taper. That would help reduce the weight substantially.
Your call of course if you even want to fix it at all. The sword is quite a jewel.

Please fix this? Late medeival two handed swords were not clumsy and poorly balanced at all. Far from it. Unless you mean those 14 lb bearing swords of the renaissance?

Please fix this? Late medeival two handed swords were not clumsy and poorly balanced at all. Far from it. Unless you mean those 14 lb bearing swords of the renaissance? I was referring to a statement made by Jan Petersen there - not to say that later swords were poorly balanced and clumsy, just that Viking swords are surprisingly well-balanced and light, even when compared to later 2 handed swords. This is meant to express contrast to their reputation. It would be just as correct to say that they were light and well-balanced compared to any sword of that or slightly later eras, in my understanding. My info is coming from Jan Petersen, mostly. But I know what you're getting at, and the wording is a little misleading. Entirely my fault, and not Paul's, I assure you!

Whatever you say Mr. "Dude, that's a type XIV right?" (for the record, 'twas a type XVI...silly canadian....) Hey, if you want to disagree with Jan Petersen, the definitive expert on Viking swords..... Besides, Medieval 2-handers were basically like Buster Swords, right?

::Snaps fingers in a Z and adopts chonga* accent::
O no j00 didn't!
*Chonga - Noun - female generally found in Miami who has the habit at shopping at office supply stores for makeup (Glue, Sharpies, etc...). Usually have around 3 children by the age of 14, drop out if high school at the age of 15, make 7 more children by the age of 19 and are arrested for prostitution at the age of 23. Then, they get out of jail at the young age of 32 and join the drug pushing business only to find that they prefer using the drugs to selling them. BY the age of 40, they've been sent back to jail for 20 years for a huge drug bust. Then they finally come back to civilization at 60 or so to rejoin the prositute business and get a nice "swing" to their lives. Usually possess a thick spanish accent that no one can understand except the men they hang around (Chongos)
For more information, go to youtube and search up "Chongalicious." I REFUSE to link to the video.
