Hi All, I'm reposting this since it was apparently lost in the meltdown before I could take a look at any responses.
As a modern epee fencer, I've been interested in the smallsword for a while, since it seems to be the closest ancestor (after the actual dueling epee) with a similar style of use. I don't know much about them, just read a little here and there, but seeing that one of Cold Steels new swords for 2010 is a Colichemerde Sword, got me thinking about smallswords again. It looks like good smallswords in the under $300 market are rather rare. With my bit of looking I've found 4.
1) Cold Steel Smallsword - Reviewed here /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=7233&page=1#112421. The consensus seems to be that it is a bit overweight and the handle, specifically the finger rings (I forget the real term at the moment) are a bit on the large side.
2) Hanwei Scottish Court Sword - Reviewed here /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=7912&page=1#123534. This offering too is on the heavy side, almost twice the historical average.
3) Cold Steel's new Colichemerde - I haven't seen much about this one, can be seen at Cold Steel here www.coldsteel.com/colichemarde.html. I think the colichemerde blade shape is really interesting, but just looking at the stats it looks like this one will also be on the heavy side.
4) G. Gedney Godwin Smallsword - Reviewed on MyArmory here www.myarmoury.com/review_ggg_ss.html, and found here www.gggodwin.com/CartGenie/prod-7.htm. This got a real positive review and looks to be the best of the bunch, although correspondingly more expensive than the rest.
It looks like both Arms&Armor and Del Tin produce a model or two as well, but generally at well outside the $300 price point.
Anyone else interested in smallswords? Has anyone handled any of these? What are your thoughts?
Any information on smallswords in general is welcome too!
