video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8339305234510333885&ei=bMuASbPkF5aWiQL80MGmCw&q=circassian+shashka&emb=1#Gents: Above is a ten minute piece from Russian television about the Circassian shashka. It's a fairly in-depth piece, and I found it chock full of good information. Apparently the shashka is descended from the knife rather than the sword. It evolved, apparently (again) out of a long knife used to cut thick vines in the Caucasus for use in home construction, among other things. A Circassian messer? Well, not really, but sorta. The grizzled old blacksmith says a good shashka should be "sharp as a razor, light as a feather, and flexible as a vine." The clip also includes some Circassian kata, and a peak into the fighting style. I really dug on it----but then, you'd sort of expect that, wouldn't you? PS: the subtitles don't exactly track the spoken Russian, but they certainly do an acceptable job.

You are most definitely correct, full of valuable information. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Happy to oblige, crazy! I'm a nut for Central Asia and the steppe, and I really learned a lot from the clip. Why don't we have clips like that here?

No, seriously, why can't I find anything about the smith featured in this video on the internet, and are my only options for a modern-made shashka/shasqua the so-so quality replicas from India? Really? I don't want a $1200 antique in bad shape...I want a new sword.

randomnobody:
Or is it Random Nobody?
I'm currently engaging in long, drawn out (my fault!) discussions with a smith recommended by our very own billiam about putting together a shashka/shasqua. While some of the dress/presentation versions are very 'dressy' indeed, the good thing about it is that it is basically a vine-trimming knife. I've seen versions with very yataghan-esque handles, which are basically fancy messer slab-handles. The whole trick, I think, is in getting the blade right.
In fact, if the current discussions break down, or prove to be un-fruitful, I'd turn---and happily---to Lundemo or Brenno (of OdinBlades and FableBlades respectively) and see what they could whip out. Certainly, after seeing the price Marc quoted for the ring-hilt, an Odin blade has moved up in my considerations.

Is there any actual Shashka out there of reasonably good quality not made by Weaponedge or Windlass? Both seem kinda "iffy" and I'm annoyed that Soviet originals, 80 years old at most, are hard to come by. So give a guy a hand, I'm lovin these blades-especially that they're meant to be LIGHTER and nimbler than the repros which are "blade-heavy".

That is an informative video, thank you. I recently purchased a Russian Shashka so I was particularly interested.
