I was trying to disassemble my new iaito to check for cracks or other problems and can not remove the tsuka. Does Musashi glue them on or is it just being difficult. How do you get them off with out tearing something up? Also are tsubas pretty much universal? I'd like change mine out for a musashi one from hanwei.

You can try using a small block of wood and a rubber mallet to try to tap and see if it will come lose. I'm not sure about musashi using glue to keep them on, so you'll have to wait and see or just email and ask them. They have pretty fast customer service so that might be your best bet. Don't try to force it off though you don't want to ruin the tsuka. Tsubas are not all universal some will be thicker then others and some you will have to grind to fit. Heres a guide that can help you see what a tsuka removal tool is and how to use it: www.toyamaryu.org/katana_disassembly.htm

Be careful with a black of wood and a hammer. Make sure you move it evenly or you will put a crack in your tsuka. I use something like what you find on this page ( Tools for a tight handle) to put even pressure on both sides while taping the tsuka off.
