Just a thought...purely out of curiosity: It occurred to me, while looking at that sword (Windlass 15th century longsword), that the pommel should (not necessarily only historically speaking but aesthetically also, IMO) have been the other way around. It's a scent stopper pommel but doesn't it looks like Windlass chose to put it upside down? Anybody has pictures of historic references for such a pommel disposition? Could somebody with photoshop skills turn the pommel around please? I'd appreciate, just out of curiosity on how it would look... For reference, here it is, at KOA: kultofathena.com/product~item~500800.htmOn a side note, I'd be also curious to read advices on how one could do this switch as a diy project? Thanks in advance for opinions and advices on this matter... Reflingar

I don't know, I actually really like the way windlass put the pommel on the sword. To turn the pommel I'd drill a hole right trough and peen it then the other way around.

Thanks very much for the references, the effort of digging for them and posting them here ShooterMike! Much appreciated. I see it in another perspective now, thx. And I understand more, am less puzzled, as to the intentions of the designers. But aren't those from a slightly later date? In fact, it made me question if this Windlass sword shouldn't be named from a later date?
The Windlass one still has a "squarish" something about it that seems to take it apart from those examples, imo. Maybe with a rounder ending...more as a water drop...or a round peen nut like on the second example...
I'm still curious at how it would have looked had it been put the other way around...
Thanks for the advice, Chenessfan!
Don't get me wrong, I like the looks, just thinking outloud and fishing for ideas, opinions and suggestions...

Yeah, I think it's kind of square-ish too. It might look a little like this with the pommel reversed:

By Oakeshott's typology, does seem that maybe they turned it around. www.myarmoury.com/feature_oakeshott3.htmlbut I too like the Windlass pommel and I have grown very fond of my 15th c. longsword cheers, Bill

Thanks for the reply and the info Billiam!
I really like that sword too...I would maybe still try and turn the pommel thought...and I really like the blueing you did on yours, that's what prompted me into blueing some of my swords!

Indeed! With the one of the third example posted, it would be real nice.

Has anyone done a review on this here? I searched but couldn't find one (just mentions of one).

M.EversbergII: Yes, look at the review index, it's the first under the Windlass list...
