To anyone who enjoys beating the snot out of their friends, what are some really durable beating swords? I've seen some on Kult of Athena (viking battle ready sword, 95$), but I want to know what are some really durable beating swords (with reasonable prices)? Thanks for your time!

Once again how skilled is your group? Is the sword not having a rebated tip going to be an issue? And you should have said you need a stage sword for stage combat from the start...not beat on each other with. Those two are VERY different things that need very different tools.

Even with a blunted stage sword someone could get really REALLY hurt if you're whacking each other with them

Yeah, that's extremely dangerous. If you're just going to randomly bop each other around, get a foam boffer -- that's what they're there for. A stage steel item is going to put one of you behind bars, and the other in a hospital or a coffin.

I have a question about a sword that I have. It is a Starfire 1 meter great sword. The warranty is voided if you sharpen the blade. Is it because the blade isn't tempered properly or due to liability concerns?
I'm either going to have it sharpened or trade it. Right now it's just an expensive piece of decor.

You might want to open your own thread on this subject mate Definately seems like we can help you with your question.

The starfire website states that their weapons are intended for stage combat only, and anything else is misuse of their product. So, I imagine it voids it because they deem that you're not using their product properly.

Get boken, shinai, or foam covered beat-sticks. Don't use metal. Also, wear appropriate protection for anything you use.

Is it because the blade isn't tempered properly or due to liability concerns? I'm either going to have it sharpened or trade it. Right now it's just an expensive piece of decor. I have had a Starfire arming sword for years. (I'm assuming you bought this at the renaissance festival in larkspur, right?) The temper--indeed, the entire heat treatment -- is fantastic on these blades, I love mine. The reason you should not, not, not sharpen these blades is the geometry they are made with. They are very specifically made for stage combat. The "edge" is thick as all get out, something like a quarter-inch. To compensate and retain a good balance on the sword, the blade profile is very narrow in width, meaning that blade is almost rectangular in cross-section. Result: A fast blade that handles like a sword should, but is pretty much incapable of cutting someone by accident. If you were to sharpen it (please don't), the amount of metal that would need to be removed to make a real edge would not only wreck the balance and handling of the sword, but also change an extraordinarily strong and safe design into a dangerous and tremendously weakened one. Starfire makes A-MAZING blunts for the price, an outstanding deal in my opinion, though they are a little lacking in variety and Historical Accuracy. My first real carbon steel blade ever was a Starfire-- I still have it and it's not going anywhere. They are great for what they are, but these pieces will never be good "sharpies." >>>>P.S. They may not be able to cut stuff, but you can beat the hell outta things with a starfire sword. Things I wouldn't dare do with my other swords are just shrugged off by the starfire when I need to release frustration on unconventional targets.

You want a durable beater made for just that purpose? Look no further than Darksword Armory - their whole purpose was to create reasonably authentic-looking pieces for the stage combatant.
They're establishing themselves in the cutter world, but a majority of their pieces still hearken to the beater crowd...
Of course, I'm assuming you're aware of safety issues that will arise from this sort of activity so if you're going to be beating on your friends, you'll want to make sure all of you are wearing some form of protective armor- it need not be chainmail and plate...I find hockey or football pads are just as effective provided the blades are not sharp.
Or, to be ultimately safe, use wood or plastic instead of steel swords...MRL offers some cool looking boffer swords for around $60; made for the LARP crowds so that should be right up your alley.

Sorry for late posting, but I TOTALLY aware of the safety percausions. We've done this hundereds of time, but we just got tired of wooden swords and thought it would be nice to put a few extra dollars into something that is more durable.

DSA is NOT a good sparring weapon. They are great for expert stage combat use when a real looking sword is needed, but with the new 1mm edge along with a sharp point and VERY stiff blades, these WILL kill somebody if used for sparring.
To the sirkillalot...umm wood and steel are two VERY different citters. A 1mm edge can cut a bottle. In fact we did this like 2 weeks ago with a unsharpend windlass which has a 1.2 mm edge. My XIIIa del tin has a 1mm edge and I can cut a cored mat with that...which means I can cut your arm with that. Unless you have plate armor on, sparring with steel is a BAD idea. Yes I am aware that ARMA does this...and they spar with steel weapons with no safety gear on too...still doesn't make it a good idea. If you MUST spar with steel weapons then get the hanwei feder. They have a decently thick edge and flexes pretty good for safe stabs. The hanwei practical swords are pretty good too...but these are better for drill and less safe for full out sparring.

You mean, they could not request a 3mm edge or better for what they plan to do with it? Eyal's pretty good at meeting customer requests that are within his power to grant, I think he'd do it so that would make a DSA a good sparring weapon, would it not?
And if they plan on acquiring more than just one sword, I think he'd be even more amenable to the idea...
sirkillalot, it can't hurt to ask.

even if Eyal does do a 3mm edge for them those swords would still be heavy and stiff. it would be like sparring with pointy rebar. this is not to insult Eyal's swords but they are big sturdy swords and no matter how blunt you make them a full speed swing is going to shatter bone if it hits squarely or at least give deep, DEEP tissue bruises.
please be very careful with steel swords blunt or sharp.

Even the sharp tip can be delt with...but unless he fundimental changes the sword, it will always be too stiff.
