I only know that I have never liked a single sword they have in their lineup. I've only handled one of their swords, the Kings sword I think its called. I barely remember it, that's how awesome it was.
My guess is, they are trying to cater to the stage groups what with their authentics line - which looks like wrought iron stuff if you ask me. Not pretty at all.

Don't have any of their stuff.... tho I have thought about picking up there Celtic sword, I love the look of it. Most of the peices I have looked at from Ritter Steel look a tad overbuilt... a bit heavier then they should be... but I have not had my hands on anything from them yet to judge. Ric Willy has a couple peices from them, I believe... and he said the same thing... a bit heavy and overbuilt. Tough and functional but not a joy to swing and hold.

Sean, if that Celtic is the 'anthropomorphic' variant (I think it retails at or around $69) you do NOT want that. I hate to use the term 'functional' but that thing is the furthest from, if you get my meaning.
Not a joy to swing or hold about sums it up for me. Thinking about that one moment, I remember the ad saying something like 'the beautiful poured brass guard and matching pommel...' - that was about all that was worth looking at and even then, it did nothing for me.

No... this one: www.kultofathena.com/product~item~2002~name~Ritter+Steel+Celtic+Short+Sword.htm I have two Stainless Steel SHARP SLO's that look exactly like this I bought for one of my RenFaire outfits awhile back... love the look of the sword, would like to have one thats functional. The Kris Cutlery one is close, but the pommel is off... I like the pommel on the ritter steel one better. Also, it's 100 dollas cheaper. However, I've been unsure about it, so have not picked it up.

I have one of their "katanas". Not too sharp, rough finish, heavy. Took a set on a bad swing against a small tree, put over my knee and it has continued on with no problems.
Do I recommend them to others? No. You can do better for the money, but if they have a model that you really like and that no one else has go for it, just keep in mind you'll likely find finish and handling issues.

Most people hate it but i see it as an asian styled western blade, especially with the scabbard. It is pretty heavy blade and doesn't really swing well. But it's a bloody tank. It feels like you can cut anything with it. The blade shouts: forget tatami go straight to trees and lampposts, bamboo is for losers i want to cut massive concrete. I'm planning on doing reviews of most of my blades and i will surely abuse the rittersteel. Then if it holds up i will sharpen an polish it and go cut with it. Because i don't like secondary bevel and sharpness of it.

I recently went over the edge with my HF beltsander. I'm liking the way it cut, I may do a vid.

And you can make the vid and update your review. I'm waiting on one more sword to be delivered but it takes for ever. When it's in i'm making the reviews. I do like the rittersteel Eurotana dough. And when i say i doesn't really swing well. i mean compared to some of my other katana's. But i don't see it as a katana so it comparing apples and peers right

Agreed, it's not a katana. It is what it is. Yeah, it cuts better after using the sander. I can get my blades sharper with the sander than I could by hand. Way faster too. Shaves hair it does, but at the same time doesn't feel all that sharp to the touch.

The pics of the Ritter Comp. Kat make it seem as though the blade was hollow ground... is that the case? I know it was the case with my braided leather katana.

Yes, Sam, it is slightly hollow ground. I never really noticed till you mentioned it.

Then it wasn't just a single occurence with my eurotana and knife from Ritter. I wouldn't consider it a katana but if you managed to get yours to cut and it seems durable then cool. Not exactly my thing though anymore. If I want a western blade I'll go for something definitely western... and katana should be more along the lines of traditional katana for me.
I'm glad that someone cut with theirs though - I was afraid to cut with mine as I couldn't disassemble it to inspect the nakago/tang.

Sam, I don't really consider it a "katana" either. I wasn't worried about cutting with it as the simple constuction looks solid enough. My RS gladius has that slight hollow grind to the blade also, sounds like it might be common to the brand. I recall a thread about the durablity of RS from a while back. Consensus was they were durable enough to be functional if I recall correctly. I'll see if I can find it. Edit - The construction of Ritter Steel tangs was discussed in this review.
