Hey guys Does anybody know if the pommel on the hanwei mortuary hilt sword is peened or threaded? I was wondering about that as I read Paul's review. A peened pommel would it make look really tempting to me... ;D

Not only threaded, but it has a hollow plastic handle to boot...

I would recommend the Hanwai Basket hilt back sword or their Cromwell.
I have the Cromwell and I like it alot. I got to look and dry handle the back sword ans that is another sword on my list.
The Mortuary is light and not good for cutting. The Cromwell is a mortuary hilt style and it handle nicely.

Alright, thanks. But I think it does cut pretty well. If you had seen Paul's review, you would have a different opinion. After edge-resharpening with an accusharp it slices through a half tatami mat without any problems. That plastic hilt sounds horrible, though.

After watching Paul's vid I'm impressed with how the Mortuary cuts. But with only $5 more you can get the back sword, which is a sturdier sword then the mortuary.

Why is the back sword sturdier?

chenessfan:
I am no sword expert, nor do I play one on tv, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but here's my best guess. KOA lists the Hanwei mortuary with a 33" blade, double edged, and a weight of 2 pounds 4 ounces. KOA further lists the Hanwei Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword with a blade of 32 3/4", single edged, and a weight of 3 pounds 1.2 ounces.
My understanding is that, for a given weight, a single edged sword will be sturdier than a double edged sword, and in this case, the backsword is almost a pound heavier.
But, umm, I could be wrong!
