I think most are familiar with the hanwei axe-handle as it has been termed. While it is not 'too' big for me, I do prefer a thinner profile. So my question is this: is there any reason I cannot sand or file it down to a more comfortable profile? The nakago/tang is certainly bigger and I wonder how thinning the tsuka will affect safety.
Thanks in advance.

No expert, but probably will crack in time depending on how much use it goes through, if you wasted the middle that might be less then if you took it from the tsuka opening. Then again what the hell do it anyway if the end result makes you happy ........ if it cracks bad enough one day to no longer be servicable make a new one from tough wood with lots of patience and elbow work until that day ........

Sounds like sage advice. Sorta what I thought myself but I'm better with leather than wood. S'pose I'll have to give it a try at some point.
Guess I was really more worried about safety as in: will this cause it to snap in multiple places and send a blade helicoptering across my yard sorta way.
