I was on the internet looking for smiths who make katana blades and one of my search results was "How to Make Your Own Katana" so just for kicks I clicked on it. It is perhaps the most insane, wrong, insane thing I have ever read about any sword. Ever. Lets just say that it involves electrical tape and welding. My favorite is step five. www.ehow.com/how_4854630_own-katana.htmlDespite being horrorfied I also thought it was kinda funny so I clicked on one of the "Related Articles" which is just another attempt to explain the process by which katana are created. This one involves "Japanese black sand" which they claim "has no equal on Earth". www.ehow.com/how_4601898_build-a-katana.htmlAnd finally I decided since I can now create my own katana I may as well to learn how to use it. This apparently involves pillows and your living room. www.ehow.com/how_2278891_use-katana.htmlThat was enough for me. I couldn't bear anymore. It was both funny and tragic, as who ever wrote those atricles obviously has the internet. I now have two things questions for the Obama adminsistration. One What are you going to do to raise katana awareness? And two: What are you going to do about the price of breakfast tacos? I remember when they used to be $0.99 everywhere. Now days your lucky to find them for under $2.00.

Black sand.... yeah.
That is how tamahagane is made. Iron bearing sand is smelted in a tatara furnace to make a bloom of tamahagane, which is then split up into little pieces that arr hendselected and painstkingly arranged according to thier carbon content. These carefully arranged bits are then forge welded into a billet , which is folded a few times to spread the impurities evenly throughout the steel...
Then the billet is drawn out into a sword, usually iron or soft steel laminated into its core, then coated with clay and differentially hardened.
Yes, all that begins with a bunch of sand.

The mind boggles.

The sad part is, people will believe it and follow it without further research.

This part: "Use a MIG welder to weld the tsuba and kashira to the sword blade."
. . . and this: "Wrap the handle with electrical tape. Coat the wrapped area with rubber cement and wrap the entire coated area with parachute cord."
Make me realize that 90% of the anime replicas and SLO's out there suddenly don't seem so bad anymore. ;D
I think they should title this one, "Things You Should Not Do In A Highschool Metal Shop When You're Bored".

I think the most profound part is part 4 of the last link... "Become the samurai master." "left to right; these are slashes. slam it down swiftly onto the dummy; this is hack."
Too effin' funny ;D

The worst part is that these articles are written by the EDITORS of eHow.com. Read the materials list. Seems like they know their way around a shop, so how could they possibly justify this article?

I just learned how to forge a sword and do samurai stuff.
Show me.
LOL
Edited to add: I was making fun w/out even reading those articles, I figured I'd get the gist. All I can say is WOW, that
a - they took the time to write it and then post it to the WWW b - they say that you must be skilled in WELDING, MIG to be exact c - there was no caveat - this is a joke, this is just in fun, this should not ever EVER be done....
Just. Wow.

I feel like this may be in for a repeat of the famous shopping channel blunder.... "hey man check this out! I welded this myself, it's strong as heck, watch this!" (insert your own SLO-meets-face sound effects here)...
